A gold frame holding a wet black glove and a badge the rain has not finished erasing

A woman holds a badge up in a wet black glove.

Synopsis

Mystery Noir · Standalone

At first it is still a badge: a rim, a seal, the small authority of metal that has been carried in weather before. A word goes, then the ring of words around it. The words leave as pale tracks and then as nothing.

She covers the disc with her other hand. Under that shelter the erasure moves faster, not slower.

When she lifts the covering hand, more of the seal is gone than the rain alone had taken. She does not cover it again. She looks down at her coat.

Extended sequence

After the cut

A wet black glove holding a blank metal disc in heavy rain, neon blurred on the street behind

The worn badge-shaped patch in the wool smooths out, thread by thread, until the cloth is even and new. The place where the patch was takes the rain the same as the rest of the coat. No outline remains for a needle to find.

The metal left in the glove is a blank disc. She closes her fingers on it and keeps the grip she used when the seal still meant its old errand. The grip is the same pressure.

Figures in the frame

Who remains

The meaning is not in the pressure. Rain runs into the cuff and she does not shake it out. A car passes and throws neon across the glove.

The light finds no engraving. It finds a smooth oval and moves on. She does not pocket the disc and does not drop it into the gutter.

Codex fragment

Filed with the room

The line is with the Fragments. It does not restore the seal, and it does not name a precinct.

The black glove stays shut on the blank metal, and the street behind her will not settle into a readable sign. The even patch of new cloth on her coat darkens with rain and does not remember a badge. She does not open the fist to check whether a letter has returned.

The scenario is filed in the Codex.

Sound of Imagination

Residual

When a residual exists it will live in Sound of Imagination. It does not exist yet. The palm is still out in it.

The disc stays blank inside the glove. The street stays a blur. Authority, if it was in the seal, is not in the rain and not in the fist, and she keeps the fist closed anyway.

Showcase

Object from the room

The gutter is already full of moving water and would take it. Her fist stays at her sternum, the blank metal inside.

Another word on a far sign tries to become readable and fails. The street will not help her restore what the rain and the shelter took. Rain strikes her wrist and runs into the cuff.

The Craft

Image · motion · sound

Notes live with The Craft.

Its neon does not come back for a second look. Water in the gutter keeps moving.

Her glove keeps the blank. The coat keeps an even place where a patch used to be.

Read it as written. The scenario.

Filed in The Houses

Darkness & Psyche · Mystery Noir

Rain on the Badge is filed under Darkness & Psyche in Mystery Noir. It is not a chapter of the nameless file. A badge that forgets and a folder that refuses are neighbors, not a sequence.

The screening comes when the film is cut. The disc is already blank.

The next room

After this filing

The street keeps its refusal to focus, and she remains in it with the old grip on a disc that no longer says what it was carried to say. The next room is Names the Rain Did Not Keep.
