Names the Rain Did Not Keep

Prologue
Six seconds · unkept names
Rain on a notice board of names. Gold streetlight. The ink runs. Names the rain did not keep.
Every name washes away except one that was never written — a blank line the rain cannot touch. People the system never recorded. Not a puzzle. A stain.

Synopsis
Mystery Noir · Standalone
A lantern, the old kind with a warm throat, hangs on a wet brick wall beside a board of pages. Across the top, in a hand that expected to last, the board has been titled for its own failure: names the rain did not keep. The sheets underneath are pinned at the corners and already losing. Ink leaves them in black strings. A line drawn across the middle cuts the board the way a clerk cuts a list into the living and the rest.
Every name the rain can reach, it takes. The taking is not poetic so much as thorough. What survives is a blank line the water cannot find, because nothing was ever written there. People the system did not record do not wash off. They were never in the ink. The board’s cruelty is that it looks like a memorial and behaves like a sieve.
This is not a leftover from the Codex, and it is not a room of Neon Noir. The lantern is oil, not a tube. The street, if there is a street, is outside the brick. Here the rain keeps a stain instead of a list. A list would have been a kindness. A list can be copied.
Extended sequence
After the cut
After the last shot the blank line is still dry. That dryness is the accusation. Everything around it is glossy with runoff, and the one place a name should have been is the place the weather refuses to touch, as if even the rain had manners about a person who was never entered.
An extra minute is only the lantern swaying and the strings of ink lengthening. Nobody comes with a fresh sheet. A fresh sheet would be an optimism the wall has not earned.

Who remains
No officer. No hand with a nail. The lantern does the only witnessing, and it witnesses paper. The unwritten name is not a character waiting in the wings. It is the gap the board cannot decorate.
A dossier would start from the blank and would have to survive the embarrassment of having nothing to index. The names that ran are not recoverable by squinting. Squinting is how you pretend a sieve is an archive.
Codex fragment
Filed with the room
The sentence the camera would not hold: the ones the rain kept were the ones nobody had written down. Kept is the wrong comfort, but it is the available word. They were not saved. They were omitted, and omission turned out to be the only waterproofing.
The line is with the Fragments. It does not belong to Chrome Veins, and it does not send you to a neon street to finish it.
Sound of Imagination
Residual
Rain on brick, the small metal complaint of a lantern hood, paper giving up. No choir of names. A choir would restore what the water spent the shot removing.
The residual, if it is recorded, belongs to Sound of Imagination. It has not been recorded. The wall is still losing ink.
Showcase
Object from the wall
The board is the object. A print of it would have to include the lantern, the brick, and the blank, or it would be a poster of sadness with the evidence cropped out.
The other five kept their stills in the room, under Mystery Noir. This wall stays on the brick, which is the more accurate gallery.
The Craft
Image · motion · sound
The picture of the board replaces the old key, which was never this wall. It belonged to another shelf and had been left on the door by mistake. The lantern, the title, the running ink: that is the minute. Motion is runoff. Sound is brick.

Filed in The Houses
Darkness & Psyche · Mystery Noir
Names the Rain Did Not Keep is filed under Darkness & Psyche in Mystery Noir. Not under Neon Noir, and not as a Codex story that happens to share a title. The title on the wood is the film’s title. The writing is the film.
The screening waits on the cut. The board does not. The rain is already at work.
