Synopsis

She looks up at him, brown hair, a worn coat over a pale shirt, mouth open on the accusation. He is in profile, dark jacket, dirt on the cheek, not standing on anything that would level.

Between them a white scale burns. One pan holds a small glowing figure. The other pan is empty. You live in ideas.

Over them, huge and lidless, an eye. It does not shut for the sake of fairness.

Extended sequence

The empty pan is not a victory. It is what the instrument does when a person declines to stand on it. He is right there, and he is not on it.

She is still trying to speak the imbalance into a correction. His face says the correction is the thing he will not wear.

Figures in the frame

Libra, bright at the mouth, coat creased, the job of the sign still in her. Aquarius, half in shadow, more comfortable as a theory than as a weight.

The little figure in the pan is not either of them. It is the stand-in he was offered. He did not get in.

Codex fragment

The night version of these two is leather, white glyphs, and a street with the sun already put down. This minute has the instrument itself, and a sky that is mostly an eye.

Fairness wants two feet. He brought a theory. The scale records that and cannot force him.

Sound of Imagination

A low tone, like stone. Her voice on one sentence. Nothing from the empty pan, which is correct. Sound of Imagination.

The eye adds no blink and no sound. It only watches the instrument fail to close.

The Craft

Still: a scale with a substitute in one pan. Motion: her mouth on the accusation. Residual: the eye, open over both. The Craft.

He lives where the empty pan is. She lives where the weight is. Nothing averages them.

Showcase

Keep the scale, not the eye. Showcase.

The eye is the room. The object is the instrument with one side unmanned.

She is still speaking. He is already elsewhere, with the scale left on.
