The Fair Cut
Key art
Synopsis
They stand where the city becomes specks. Storm cloud, blue and heavy. Brown hair under a net, a dirt mark on the cheek, a wet black leather coat. Messy hair, dark streaks on the jaw, mouth open, the jacket taking the wind.
A fair cut takes time. From this height, time looks like the lights below, already on, already elsewhere. His mouth is still working. The city is not waiting for the verdict.
No knife, no board. The cut is the gap between a person trying to be exact and a person who has already spent the breath.
Extended sequence
Wind takes the hem of her coat. He does not wait for it to settle. That impatience is ordinary, which does not make it smaller.
The overlook makes exactness look faint. The drop is doing more work than the sentence.
Figures in the frame
Libra, the net, the mark on the cheek, a just sentence still being assembled. Aries, streaked, open-mouthed, already in the next clause.
Profile, close. The fall behind them is the real space. The argument is using an inch of it.
Codex fragment
Off the Scale has an instrument and a lidless eye. This minute has weather and a fall of lights. Exactness here is a woman trying to finish while the other sign spends the air.
The fair version arrives late. The lights underneath are already living in the late.
Sound of Imagination
Wind at an edge. Her coat. His voice, not done. Sound of Imagination.
Height eats the traffic. The minute does not go looking for it.
The Craft
Still: two faces against cloud. Motion: his mouth, her hem. Residual: warm lights, small, under the argument. The Craft.
Exactness is still being spoken. The drop has already chosen the scale.
Showcase
Keep the dirt mark, not the skyline. Showcase.
Any city can glitter. The mark is the proof the height was not clean.
