Before the synopsis
An operator's hands rest on the dials.
Synopsis
The trace on the scope is noise, even and useless, a grey scribble with no repeat. Headphones lie on the desk, one earpiece down, the cord in a loose loop. A wall clock above the scope sweeps a second at a time and has been doing only that.
Three beats, then a gap. Three beats, then a gap. The change is small and then undeniable.
The wall clock's second hand sticks in each gap and jumps on each beat. The stick is a hesitation. The jump catches the second up.
Extended sequence
The operator lifts both hands off the dials. Palms hover and then settle in the lap. The pattern continues. None of the dials creep.
Their marks stay where the fingers left them. The dish outside does not slew. Its shadow on the window is fixed.
Figures in the frame
The room is no longer asking. The room is being told. A fourth beat arrives inside the gap, where the room had no control to ask for one. The clock accepts it.
The second hand's jump grows by that extra hit and still lands on time. The scope redraws: three, the new beat, the gap. The line is brighter at the new beat than at the old three.
Codex fragment
The headphones knock that new count into the desk. Static keeps the extra beat, and the operator does not put a hand back on the board to claim it. The dish stays where it was aimed. The clock keeps the new hesitation and the new jump. Hands stay in the lap.
The scenario is filed in the Codex.
Sound of Imagination
The grey scribble is no longer useless and is still not anyone's to adjust. The pencil's tremble becomes the room's only motion besides the scope and the clock. No one else enters to take the board. The operator watches the four-count without correcting it back to three. Static holds the pattern it introduced, and the hands that could have claimed it remain off the dials until the knock in the wood is the loudest thing the quiet room allows.
Showcase
The operator's hands stay in the lap. The headphones on the desk carry the same pattern into the wood, a small knock no finger is making. The knock is in the desk's grain.
A pencil beside the headphones trembles on each new beat and does not roll off. The dials stay untouched. The fourth beat stays in the pattern.
The Craft
The operator's knee does not bump the desk into a false fifth knock. The headphones keep their own count.
Three, the new beat, the gap, again. The dish outside holds its aim through a gust that moves only the weeds at its base. Static does not relax into the old useless scribble.
Read it as written. The scenario.

The next room
After this filing
The hands in the lap stay hands in the lap, and the board stays unclaimed while the clock learns a rhythm no dial was turned to request. The next room is Ice Giant.
