First Contact / Signal

The reply arrived before the question.

Overview

First Contact / Signal — Aestas Infinity

Climate

First Contact / Signal in Future & Machine: messages that arrive before understanding, contact without comfort. Standalone films — series chapters stay under Episodes.

A reply comes before anyone agreed there had been a question. Static arranges itself into a pattern and does not translate. The sky thins until weather has a tear in it. A market opens onto two moons and sells to no one you can find. An ice giant does not require a landing speech. Colony lights burn at a distance that might be a welcome, if welcomes were in the habit of not explaining themselves.

Signal Null remains a series under Episodes. It is not these six rooms. A handshake would be a different climate, and a kinder lie.

The principle

The first signal arrives before understanding.

The incoming is not a handshake. Messages arrive before understanding, and the film will not hire a linguist to make you feel met. Contact, here, is a pattern that noticed you. Comfort is not part of the packet.

If the sky spoke in a language you could answer, you could file the night under diplomacy. These films refuse the filing. The first mistake is thinking a reply means you were asked.

Reply

The First Reply

The First Reply is already on the table when the room decides to listen. No ship lands. No hand is offered. The answer is simply earlier than the question, which is a bad sign in any craft, including this one.

Impossible Market keeps its stalls open onto a sky with two moons. Fruit, cloth, metal, none of it priced for a person who belongs here. The customers have stepped out of the frame, or were never the point. Trade is just the shape contact takes when it does not want to be called an invasion.

A market open to the sky. Two moons. No one in the stalls.

Shattered Sky

The sky itself has thinned and torn. Nothing is hanging in front of it.

Shattered Sky is the sky itself, thinned until it tears. Nothing hangs in front of it. No banner, no hull, no prophet. Weather develops a hole and does not bleed. The tear is the message. Reading it is your problem, and the film suspects you will do it wrong.

Pattern in the Static is not noise with ambitions. The static was the first language. A tone arrives, repeats, and declines to become a voice. People who need a voice will invent one. The climate does not.

Pattern in the static. The signal is locked.

Static

A body of ice, lit and indifferent. A tiny ship does not land. No markings.

Ice Giant does not require a landing speech. The body is there, lit, indifferent, larger than the errand that brought a camera near it. Awe is allowed. A claim is not. Nothing on that ice applied for visitors.

Colony Lights may be a welcome or a warning. The lamps burn in a pattern a lonely person could take personally. The film does not decide for you, which is not kindness. It is a refusal to lie about distance. Far light is still just light until someone spends a life on the crossing.

Colony lights. Distance is the plot.

How to enter

The message arrives before understanding.

The First Reply if you want the first mistake. Pattern in the Static if the message is already weather. Colony Lights if distance is the plot.

Shattered Sky if the tear is in the sky and not in a flag. Impossible Market if commerce is the visitation. Ice Giant if you can look at a thing that will not look back.

A story that continues lives under Episodes. These do not.
