One line

Before the synopsis

A man turns a page and, in the turn, touches his collar with two fingers, a gesture too small for a greeting.

Synopsis

Across the room a woman answers with the same two fingers at her own collar. Between them, nothing is proclaimed. No head lifts to make it public.

A door at the back, locked when the afternoon began, gives a soft unlatching that only the gesture seems to have earned. The door stays nearly shut. A man new to the room sees the exchange.

The exchange is not for him. He looks down at once, but the seeing has already happened. His book is open to a page he does not read.

Extended sequence

On the inside of the woman's cuff, when she reaches for a pencil, a small dark pin catches the light, the same shape the first man wears half-hidden at his lapel. The pin is a short glint and then her sleeve covers the motion of reaching. The newcomer touches his own lapel and finds it empty. The woman notes the emptiness without a change of expression.

She does not recruit him. She also does not look away as if he were still outside the matter. Her pencil meets the page.

Figures in the frame

She writes nothing he can see from his table. The first man stands, collects nothing, and passes through the newly open door. The door admits him and does not slam. The woman follows a minute later, the pin covered again by her sleeve.

Her green lamp stays on over an open book she does not close. The newcomer remains at his table. The door stays unlatched.

Codex fragment

None of them repeats the two-finger touch. The newcomer stays seated with an empty lapel, and the unlatched door keeps its narrow dark without taking him. Dust in the green light does not settle on the gap. The first man's chair is bare. The woman's pencil lies where she left it.

The scenario is filed in the Codex.

Sound of Imagination

The order that answered itself across the room has left the room, and the man who saw it remains among the lamps with nothing on his lapel to answer with. The newcomer turns one page and does not perform the collar touch on the turn. Nothing unlatches for him. The narrow dark beyond the door does not open farther.

Showcase

A finger's gap shows a darker room beyond, and no one on his side of it invites him through. The lamp over his book stays on. He does not touch his collar.

The page in front of him stays the page he has not read. The door remains a finger open, and the pin's small shine is gone with the sleeve that covered it. Other readers keep their separate tables.

The Craft

A chair leg at the woman's empty place ticks and is quiet. Her pencil does not roll.

Green lamps burn at their separate tables. People who never made the gesture keep reading. He keeps his hand off his plain lapel.

Read it as written. The scenario.

The next room

After this filing

The door stays a finger open for the ones who have already gone through, and the reading room does not explain them to the man they left behind. The next room is The Cipher Garden.
