House of Gold

The Letter

REMBRANDT-08 · Figurine

The figure

A woman in a pale gold gown reading a letter, a servant kneeling beside her

Black marble · Brass plaque · Not a reproduction

The object

She sits in a pale gold gown, in a stone basin, and reads a letter. A servant in brown kneels at her feet. The plaque reads The Letter.

In the museum she is naked. On the plate and on this base she is clothed. The letter is the object. The bath is only the seat.

The base is black marble with gold veins. The plaque is brass. The figure leaves the plate. It does not leave the museum, and it is not a toy.

The plate

Plate 08 of House of Gold. After Bathsheba at Her Bath. Louvre, MI 957, 1654.

The water is not poured. Nothing is added to make the base a bath scene.

The painting stays in the museum. This object is the plate, standing.
