The Hand on the Head

REMBRANDT-07 · Figurine

The figure

A bearded man in black and gold resting his hand on a white marble bust

Black marble · Brass plaque · Not a reproduction

The object

He stands in black and gold. One hand rests on a white bust. The other holds a gold chain. The plaque reads The Hand on the Head.

The bust is a separate piece on its own small stand, still on the same marble. The hand is the point of the object. The chain hangs, it is not worn as jewellery.

The base is black marble with gold veins. The plaque is brass. The figure leaves the plate. It does not leave the museum, and it is not a toy.

The plate

Plate 07 of House of Gold. After Aristotle with a Bust of Homer. Metropolitan Museum, 61.198, 1653.

Homer is not named on the plaque. The base names the hand.

The painting stays in the museum. This object is the plate, standing.
