Key art

A stone chapel. Candles along the ledge, open papers, an empty niche at the end.

Prologue

Candles crowd a long ledge. Open papers cover the ledge and the step below it, sheets weighted by their own damp, words showing and not being read aloud.

One line

Before the synopsis

At the end of the nave, a niche stands empty.

Synopsis

The wall beside the ledge is papered with prayers already pinned and left, corners curled, pinheads dull. Wax has run down the stone in old paths and hardened. A man in a worn coat reads one prayer in his hands.

His mouth does not move. The paper shakes once with his breath and steadies.

Three figures, already done with their own papers, walk the nave toward the door and do not turn around. One of them pauses at the door as if a last look were possible, and then does not take it. The door stays open behind them for a while.

Extended sequence

After the cut

A hand short of a wooden cross. Papers on the step. Three figures already leaving the nave.

He steps to a wooden cross fixed under the niche. His hand rises and stops short of the wood. The grain is close enough to warm and he does not touch it.

The prayer stays in his other hand. He sets it on the step with the open papers, face up, the words still showing. A corner lifts in a draft from the door and settles back, still readable, still unanswered.

Figures in the frame

At the edge

A man in a worn coat reads one prayer. The wall behind him is papered with the rest.

A candle near his sleeve burns into a stump and goes over. The flame dies against a book whose cover is scorched, a black kiss that does not spread into fire.

He takes the book and the stump off the ledge and sets them on the stone, not back among the burning row. The stump rolls a little, meets the book, and stops. Smoke from the dead wick is a brief thread and is gone.

Codex fragment

What the still would not say

He watches it finish and does not rub it. Wax from a living candle reaches the place where the stump stood and stops at the empty stone, unwilling to cross onto the gap. The three sets of footsteps are already gone from the nave.

The scenario is filed in the Codex.

Before the score

His own shoes stay where he stopped, short of the cross. One pinned prayer on the wall loosens at its lower corner after the door shuts, the paper bowing out and then hanging by a single pin. He does not press it flat.

Showcase

Object from the room

A candle burned into a stump, and a scorched book, taken off the chapel ledge.

The three figures are gone. He remains with the empty niche at his shoulder and the wall of papers at his back.

Time passes as the other candles burn level, none of them replaced, wax adding to the old paths. The scorched cover, after the flame dies, raises a pale blister in the leather and lets the blister sink flat, a scar that was not there when the book sat on the ledge.
