Archive Dust

Prologue
Steel shelves recede into dark, can after can, the labels turned just far enough to be unreadable. One warm beam falls on a zinc table and holds the dust there as if the dust had been filed.

Synopsis
Anthology Fragment · Standalone
Metal cans are stacked beside a brass bowl of leaves that have already given up being leaves. A corked vial of grey sediment waits, unused, the cork seated, the glass dry on the outside. She does not reach for the vial.
The beam does not reach the shelves. What the shelves keep, they keep without her.
She sets both hands on a stack of paper that no longer holds a shape. The stack slumps under her gloves. Paper lifts as powder, sheet after sheet giving up its edge.
Extended sequence
After the cut
The beam fills with it. For a while the powder is all the motion in the room, a slow rising that has no hurry and no sentence left in it. Her gloves rise a little, the start of a brush, the start of saving a line, and then stop in the air.
She does not brush the powder away. She does not sweep it back into a story the room has refused. Her hands return to her sides.
Figures in the frame
Kept at the edge
Grey settles on the wool at her wrists and stays, a pair of soft cuffs she does not shake off. The powder does not fall all at once. Some of it stays in the beam, turning.
Some of it settles on the zinc, deep enough to cover the shadow of her wrist and not arranged to look like anything else. A thicker drift gathers along a scratch in the metal and makes the scratch disappear. Minutes pass with only that settling.
Codex fragment
The cans keep their labels and their silence. A label corner, touched by the falling powder, curls and stops, a small ear of paper that will not lie flat again. The powder on the zinc, deep enough now to take a mark, receives one more fall from the beam and loses the last hint of a page edge.
The scenario is filed in the Codex.
Sound of Imagination
What was almost a corner becomes only depth. The vial's sediment, still corked, shows a faint line where it has settled tighter in the glass, a level that was not there when she came in. She does not compare them aloud.
Showcase
Object from the room
A can higher in the stack ticks as its lid cools. The leaves in the bowl are the same color as the sediment in the vial.
She leaves the bowl where it is. She leaves the cork where it is. The shelves keep their dark.
The Craft
Image · motion · sound
She does not open either vessel. Her glove, lifted once more toward the vial, stops short of the cork and returns to her side.
Powder hangs in the warm beam, thinner than before and not gone. The zinc holds an even field where a stack used to be.
Read it as written. The scenario.

The next room
After this filing
The curled label keeps the small bend the powder gave it, and the grey on her gloves stays where it chose to settle. The next room is Incomplete Testimony.
