Overview

Anthology Fragment files the piece, not the night it came from. A page still has the crease of another book. A reel is missing and the archive files the absence as the document. Beginning and end without the work of the middle. Archive Lines will not hire the rest of an anthology to make the fragment look complete, and it will not turn dust into décor.

The climate is paper-warm, torn, incomplete. It is not melancholy rain and it is not a civic blackout. Fen Arkwright keeps pieces of other nights. Blythe Orr mends books and leaves the crease. Tomasin Grey takes statements that stop before the verb. Ione Pell logs reel numbers that have no oxide. Ward Elling binds beginnings and ends. Mira Hest handles files until they powder. Dust is what remains when a file is handled too long. That is the weather.

What is refused: a sequel that supplies the missing night, a twist that names the torn page, a voice that reads the fragment as if it were whole. Stay with the tear.

The principle

The reel is missing. The number is kept.

Archive Lines. Recovered rather than announced. The gap is the document. A number can be kept when the picture cannot. The climate treats that blank as a cut, not as a hole a later night is obliged to fill.

Anthology Fragment will not hire the rest of the book to make the torn page look intentional in a comforting way. The tear was the intention. Completing it would be a kind of vandalism with better manners.

The tear

Story without middle. The middle was declined.

Page Torn From the World keeps the crease of another book. Blythe Orr mends the binding and leaves the fold, because flattening it would be a lie about where the page had been. The paper is warm. The missing half is not on the table, and it is not in a sequel.

The Missing Reel is a number with no oxide on it. Ione Pell logs the number anyway. A reel that is not in the can is still a record of the can. Fragment of a Larger Night is Fen Arkwright's habit: a piece of someone else's dark, filed, not explained, not returned.

Dust

Archive Dust is not décor and not melancholy rain. Mira Hest does not sweep the table. Powder on zinc is still a file. Turn it back into the afternoon it fell from and you have ended the climate in order to feel tidy.

Incomplete Testimony stops before the verb. Tomasin Grey takes the statement and does not supply the act the speaker could not reach. A full confession would be a different genre. This one ends where the voice does, which is rude, and accurate.

Story Without Middle

Two landscapes. The middle of the book is torn out. A lamp sits in the gap.

Story Without Middle is Ward Elling's object: two landscapes, a lamp where the middle was declined, a page with the crease of a book that is not this one. Beginning and end, bound, with the work of the middle refused. Readers who need a middle can go and live in one. The archive will not build it for them.

The handlers are not a cast imported from a kinder house. The portrait is the hand. The object is the gap. Stay with the tear.
