The Missing Hill
Key art

The record
The hill is yellow clay, smooth, with no path. It is missing the way a line is missing from a log: not ruined, omitted. People with money have a word for that. They say it is missing, and pay someone else to stand where the map refused.
Shepherds do not climb it. When they are asked why, they look at the sky, as if the reason had been written there and then taken down. The sky does not answer. The hill does not grow a path out of politeness.
What the climate keeps
Inside is one niche. No offerings, no vessels, no inscription. The dead are supposed to face sunrise, home, or the people who will come after. This one faces the rock. The rule is older than the coin: you do not bury a person toward a wall unless you are passing sentence.
Gold here is not wealth. It is long-term storage that predates the chip and does not agree to be emptied. It will not melt. It comes back. A grave in this weather is allowed to face the morning only after the thing that was taken has been returned to the eye.
Not the other rooms
This is not the story, which keeps the nights. It is not the scenario, which keeps the order of looking. It is the weather the picture has to obey: clay, salt, a sky trusted more than a question, and a silence that feels like the inside of the hill.
