Before the synopsis

A stamp, a pad, and an empty picture sleeve clipped to the page are the whole apparatus.

Synopsis

Pema Holt

The sleeve is a pocket of clear board with nothing in it. The event it belongs to stays unseen on purpose. She does not send anyone to fetch a likeness, and she does not sketch one into the margin.

The lamp on the desk lights the empty sleeve and shows exactly that emptiness, a clear pocket, no face, no place drawn by hand. A runner's note, already on the desk when she sat, names only a place and asks for a time. The place is a place.

The ask is only for the hour. She checks a plain clock, inks the stamp, and presses the hour beside the empty sleeve. The impression is sharp.

Extended sequence

What is refused

extended sequence

The sleeve stays empty. Quiet is not a failure of the entry. The entry is the hour, witnessed by ink because no picture was going to stand for it. She holds the stamp a moment longer than a hurried clerk would, then lifts it clean.

She writes the place under the stamp and stops before a description. Description would pretend she had seen. The pen hovers and does not invent a color or a person.

She blots the edge, leaves the sleeve unfilled, and sets the stamp back in the tray. The ink of the hour feathers one edge and then stops, still only the hour, a small spread that follows the pressing and does not become a picture. The unseen event does not enter the room. The runner's note stays where it was, already satisfied by the stamp and not by a drawing.

The hour stands in ink beside an empty sleeve where a picture was never going to go. The feathered edge dries. The pad stays inked for a next hour that is not this one.

Codex fragment

Fragment

Codex dossier

Nothing in the margin is sketched. The note does not grow a sentence. The stamp in the tray does not press itself a second time. Pema does not reopen the sleeve to check it for a picture that might have arrived while she blotted.

The scenario is filed in the Codex.

Sound of Imagination

Live tape

Sound edition

The clear board stays clear. The sharp hour stays sharp even where one edge feathered, and the feathering does not crawl into a second digit. The runner's note yellows a little under the lamp and still names only a place. The plain clock's hand moves across a minute that does not belong to a new event.

logbook and stamp

Object

Pema's hands leave the page. The plain clock keeps moving.

The clear sleeve keeps nothing. No likeness arrives late to fill what the entry refused, and the place she wrote remains a place without a description attached. The lamp stays on the sharp impression and on the empty pocket.

The Craft

The Craft · Archive Lines

Image · Motion · Sound · Result

No one comes in with a likeness and an apology for lateness. The margin stays blank.

The stamp stays in the tray. The pad stays ready and unused.

Read it as written. The scenario.

Filed in The Houses

Timestamp of the Unseen is filed in Chronicle / Log. House film. The house keeps the climate. The climate keeps this title — not a genre tag taped on after the fact.

The next room

After this filing

What was unseen stays outside the room, and the page keeps the hour anyway, because the hour was the whole of the witness the desk was built to make. The next room is Log of the Last Operator.
