Synopsis
The balance has been clawed down to question marks. The paper frays inside the marks and does not tear through. The book lists who remains.
No wolf is drawn in the book. The page number is still a page number. The claw marks do not form a picture of an animal. The wall beyond the table is only an opening.
Through it, a city stands small under a night of low cloud. A few windows are lit and do not flicker. A hand large enough to close over that city hangs above the roofs, cracked at the knuckles, not yet shut.
Extended sequence
After the cut
The cracks in the knuckles are dark lines, not wet. A black wolf stands in the breach, placed where the opening fits him. He is at the opening, not on the page. His paws are on the broken edge.
His coat takes no light from the small windows. The claws on the ledger tighten their marks. The question marks deepen. One stroke lengthens until the paper thins and does not part, a further mark that follows the first deepening and still is not a wolf drawn in the book.
Figures in the frame
At the edge
The wolf steps once, fully into the breach, and stops. The great hand lowers a span and stops short of the roofs. A little dust falls from the knuckles and does not reach the streets. The lit windows stay lit.
A torn log is pressed into the concrete at the edge of the opening, the book's twin, ripped and fixed in the wall. A flake of that torn page lets go and sticks to the concrete below it. The wolf does not look toward the ledger.
Codex fragment
What the still would not say
The flake on the concrete stays a flake. The wolf's one step is not followed by a second. The great hand holds its span above the roofs and does not finish the closing it began. Night keeps the city small, and the open page keeps only the questions the claws already made. The table does not shake.
The scenario is filed in the Codex.
Sound of Imagination
Before the score
The ledger's cover, folded back, keeps 1749 open to the room and to the breach. Question marks stay question marks. They do not resolve into a payment, a loss, or a debt that would let the page lie flat in peace. The wolf's coat does not shed onto the concrete. The great hand's knuckles stay cracked and stay open.
Showcase
Object from the room
The hand does not close. Low cloud does not lift. The city stays small in the breach.
The wolf stays in it. On the table, 1749 remains open, and the balance remains question marks. The deepened marks do not spell a sum.
The Craft
Image · motion · sound
Dust that fell earlier does not rise. The city's small lit windows do not go out and do not multiply.
The torn log fixed in the wall does not pull free. No one at the table draws a wolf into the margin to explain the claws. The opening remains an opening.
Read it as written. The scenario.
