One line
Before the synopsis
The second hands move and then are back at the top of the same minute, as if the travel had been a courtesy and not a change.
Synopsis
A departure board flickers between names, a city becoming another city inside the same yellow letters. The letters rearrange without a click the ear can trust. Passengers sit with luggage between their feet.
No train is shown arriving. A calm voice overhead names a platform, then names a different platform for the same destination, as if the platforms themselves had moved.
The voice does not hurry and does not correct itself. A woman in a gray coat stands, takes the handle of a small case, and walks toward the number she heard. Her shoes sound on the tile and the sound is ordinary.
Extended sequence
Halfway across the tile the board changes her platform again. The case swings once and hangs. The announcement repeats, unruffled, and offers a third number.
She looks at the clocks. They have not become 3:18. A second hand on the nearest clock reaches toward the next minute and falls back to where 3:17 keeps it.
Figures in the frame
She returns to the bench and sets the case where it was, handle aligned with the grout. A man beside her almost rises at the next call, then sees her stillness and stays. His hands remain on his knees.
Wheels sound somewhere under the hall and do not come up the ramp. The sound grows, holds, and fades without a headlight. The board swaps two names and settles on neither for long.
Codex fragment
Other luggage stays between other feet, handles where their owners set them when the waiting began. A second hand on another clock makes the same courtesy of travel and returns to 3:17. The empty hook where a sign should hang does not grow a new plate.
The scenario is filed in the Codex.
Sound of Imagination
Wheels under the hall do not return. The calm voice does not apologize and does not arrive at a number the signs will hold. Yellow letters continue to trade one city for another.
Showcase
The woman keeps her hands on her knees. The case handle, aligned, shifts one grout line when the wheels sound their loudest, and she moves it back.
That small realignment follows the refused departure and does not become a boarding. The woman does not stand again. The man beside her keeps his hands on his knees.
The Craft
The grout under the woman's case stays the grout she chose the second time. No arrival changes the faces of the clocks, and no passenger trades a bench for a ramp that has not produced a train.
The high hall keeps its quiet after the voice.
Read it as written. The scenario.
Filed in The Houses
The Station at 3:17 is filed in Liminal Spaces. Platforms open. Timetables disagree. No train is late because no train is due. The house keeps the climate. The climate keeps this title — not a genre tag taped on after the fact.
The next room
After this filing
The clocks remain at 3:17, and the luggage stays where the waiting put it. The next room is Hallway Between Years.
