Under a round window, Hester Brann stands in a pale dress with a brass bowl in both hands. The bowl's rim is dark where fingers have taken the same place for a long time.

Synopsis

Ritual Cycle · Standalone

Hands held in an unfinished arc over a worn chalk circle.

No chant moves the hall. The round window gives a piece of moon and nothing of a doctrine. She holds the bowl level and does not offer it forward.

A full moon sits low over the wall. Red cloth hangs and does not perform a doctrine. The cloth moves once and then hangs straight.

White chalk covers the stone in semicircles laid over semicircles until the teaching is only a groove. The groove is worn pale in the middle and brighter where newer chalk was laid and walked down. Robed adults make a ring.

Extended sequence

After the cut

A row of brass bowls set on a chalk-marked stone floor.

At a stone basin, hooded figures stand in low warm light, water catching and not being taken. The water repeats the moon in pieces and is not lifted. A row of brass bowls waits on the chalk, each rim dark in the same places as Hester's.

Over the white circle, worn smooth by other hands, fingers hold an arc and do not complete it. The hands stay open at chest height. The arc is the same in every pair, a shape taught by repetition and not by a voice.

Figures in the frame

Kept at the edge

A woman in a pale dress holding a brass bowl at the edge of a moonlit court.

One pair draws inward until the fingertips almost meet. That near-join would end the motion. The fingers return to the open arc, the same unfinished shape, the reason for it long gone and unsaid.

A brass bowl on the chalk rocks when a hem brushes it and settles. The groove under the near-join deepens by a grain, a small change that follows the return to the open arc and does not finish the circle. Hester remains at the edge of the court, bowl in both hands, moon behind the rock.

Codex · fragments

The row of bowls stays in its line. Hester's bowl stays level. She does not set it among the row on the chalk and does not lift it to the moon. The red cloth hangs straight.

The scenario is filed in the Codex.

Sound of Imagination

An empty cut-stone passage, the ritual continuing out of frame.

Sound of Imagination

The hooded figures at the basin do not dip a hand. Water keeps catching the moon in pieces. The deepened grain in the groove does not become a completed circle. Open hands keep the arc at chest height, fingertips apart by the same refusal that undid the near-join.

Showcase

Object from the room

A brass ritual bowl on dark cloth, the rim worn by handling.

She does not join the ring. Bodies step aside into a plain stone passage and leave it empty.

Their robes sound once on the stone and then the passage is only stone. The groove continues without them. Water in the basin catches and is still not taken.

The Craft

Image · motion · sound

A dusk court, red hanging cloth, and a low moon over the wall.

The Craft

The stone passage stays plain and empty. No chant starts in the hall behind the round window.

The brass rims stay dark where fingers have always taken their place, and no one drinks. Fingers hold the unfinished arc above the worn chalk.
