Synopsis

They have walked for centuries. One of them is no longer among them. No one speaks of it.

A line of ancient warriors moves through cold fog toward a distant dark city. Their faces show nothing. Their steps never slow. On the horizon waits Blackstone Keep — black stone against a violet sky, windows without light, walls that may keep the world out or something older in.

Under an arch the torches show the gap in the line. The space is the size of a man. The march does not close it.

Extended sequence

After the cut

Three under the arch, torches lit, a gap in the line

Under the arch, three remain where four should stand. Torches show the gap. The missing space is man-sized and nobody steps into it.

Fog takes the prints. The keep on the horizon is not closer than it was a century ago.

Who remains

One warrior at the edge, an eye sigil on the cloak

One warrior at the edge of the march, the eye-sigil on the cloak, the dark city still ahead. The line prefers him unnamed.

The dossier starts from the gap beside him, not from a roll of the dead.

Residual

Steps in fog, even, never hurried. Wind far off. Torch crackle. Under it a hum the color of that violet hour, as if the sky over the keep were a held note. Sound of Imagination

The Long Walk — the earlier key still

The line against the keep is the still. Motion is the step that does not close the gap. The residual is torch smoke, and a number that is wrong. The Craft
