One line

Before the synopsis

Far off, a spire stands under storm, its windows lit.

Synopsis

A second spire shows through the haze, and the river runs between them. A doorway with no house stands at his shoulder. He does not step through it.

Rain has not reached this stone yet. The storm is on the spire, not on him. Threads of the red cloak lift and fall without taking him anywhere.

He watches the river keep its line. The last light sits on the water like a path that does not climb. His hands stay at his sides.

Extended sequence

After the cut

The cliff is a ruin. A doorway with no house. The spire's windows are lit.

The gorget at his throat is still clasped. Minutes pass as the lit windows of the spire holding their small squares, and as the second spire remaining only a darker shape in the haze. The doorway beside him shows the same night on both sides, because there is no house to make an inside. The river shifts toward him.

The lit water leaves its line and comes up the dark of the bank, as far as the light can climb, and no farther. He does not move his hands. The cloak threads lift and fall once.

Figures in the frame

At the edge

The armor from behind. The cloak torn to threads. Two spires, and the river between them.

Then the river goes back to its bed. The last light stays on the water and does not climb again. The spire windows remain lit under the storm. A thread of the red cloak catches on the doorway's edge and stays, a scrap the wind does not finish taking.

He unclasps a gorget and a strip of the red cloak. He sets them in the doorway with a print of the same horizon, the river and the spire already on the paper. The print does not change when the real river settles.

Codex fragment

What the still would not say

The gorget, the red strip, and the print lie in the doorway. The river keeps its last light and does not come toward him again. The caught thread stays on the edge of the doorway. The spire windows do not go out.

The scenario is filed in the Codex.

Sound of Imagination

Before the score

The print lies dry and unrevised beside the gorget. He remains with his back to the roofless room, and the river keeps to its bed under the last of its light. Storm light stays on the far spire and does not cross the river to the cliff. The second spire remains a darker shape.

Showcase

Object from the room

A gorget, a strip of the red cloak, and a print of the same horizon.

The river line drawn on the paper darkens as if the climb had wet it, then dries back to the line it had, unchanged. That darkening follows the river's return and does not repeat the climb.

He does not pick the print up to compare it longer. The armor stays on him except for the gorget he set down. The armor stays on the cliff, back to the empty room.

The Horizon That Answers Once — the earlier key still

Threads of the red cloak that are still on his shoulders lift once more and fall without the river answering them. The doorway holds what he set down: metal, cloth, paper.

None of the three slides. His hands, empty of the gorget, stay at his sides.

Read it as written. The scenario.

The next room

After this filing

The bank where the light climbed is dark again, and the water keeps its line as if the climb had been a thing the river tried once and finished. The next room is Floating Isles.
