Prologue

The circle remembers

On dark basalt a salt and chalk circle lies with one gap, large enough for a shoe. A tired man in a dark wool coat stands small beside a closed iron door.

One line

Before the synopsis

A closed circle of salt and chalk on a dark vault floor, an iron door open onto black

A brass recorder on a wooden stand is aimed at the circle, not at his face.

Synopsis

Occult Ritual · Standalone

An old ledger lies open to an empty grid. A white glove rests at the edge of the page. His own hands are bare and grey at the knuckles.

The gap in the circle faces the door. Chalk dusts his cuff though he has not drawn yet. The recorder's reel is still.

The iron door shows no light at its seams. The glove is clean, smaller than his hand would want if he tried it, and he does not try it. Minutes pass as the vault's cold and as the circle staying open by that one gap.

Extended sequence

After the cut

Two ends of a salt and chalk line meeting on black stone, with a small puff of dust at the join

Where the gap was.

The room, after.

He looks at the gap the way a man looks at a task he has done before. He does not step into the circle. The basalt holds his shadow small, the way the room holds him.

He kneels and draws the gap shut with a stick of chalk. The ends of the line meet. A small puff of dust rises at the join and settles as fresh chalk on the black stone.

Figures in the frame

Who remains

A tired man in a dark wool coat standing before a pale circle on a vault floor, looking into the lens

The new chalk is brighter than the old line for a moment and then matches it. He stays on his knees long enough to see that no second puff comes. The recorder's reel turns once, a fraction, with no hand on it, and stops.

That turn follows the closing. The white glove does not creep toward his fingers. The iron door opens onto black.

Codex fragment

Filed with the room

An old ledger page with an empty grid and a faint circle of chalk dust, a white glove at the edge

The plates and the order are the scenario. The file is the book.

He remains beside it, small against the dark, and the closed circle holds the place where the dust jumped. The reel does not turn again. The printed circle on the grid does not blow off the page. The open door keeps its black.

The scenario is filed in the Codex.

Sound of Imagination

Residual

The motor is present, and then it is not. What follows is silence, and after that a low tone. It belongs to Sound of Imagination when it is filed.

The glove stays unpaid-for and unclaimed. He stays outside the salt, and the join in the circle holds the brighter chalk it spent when the gap closed. Cold from the open door reaches the salt and does not break the circle. The man's bare knuckles stay grey.

Showcase

Object from the universe

A strip of blank 16 mm film, one frame lit from behind with a tiny bright ring

One frame of a closed ring. Not a ritual kit. The Showcase

He gets to his feet and does not cross the salt. On the ledger a faint circle of chalk dust has printed itself across the empty grid.

The white glove is still not his. He leaves the glove where it lies. The door stays open on the black.

The Craft

Image · motion · sound

A broken band of salt and chalk on black stone, the gap cut rather than smeared

One low lamp. The salt throws a shadow longer than itself. The rest is kept with The Craft.

He does not put on the white glove to make them otherwise. Chalk on his cuff brushes the ledger when he shifts and adds nothing to the printed circle already there.

The brass reel holds the fraction it turned. Black beyond the door shows no step, no returning dust, no second puff.

Read it as written. The scenario.

The next room

After this filing

The same man, eye lowered from a film camera, a salt circle on the floor behind him

He keeps his place beside the iron, small against that black, and the join in the salt stays closed around the brighter chalk. The next room is Salt and Silence.
