Prologue

A seal is stamped into the plaster of a landing: a circle, a vertical mark, nothing that asks to be feared at first glance. A man on his way down stops because the mark is new and because it is exact.

One line

Before the synopsis

He traces the air in front of it without touching the wall.

Synopsis

The landing is otherwise empty. A chair someone left under the high window holds a folded coat. Day from the window lays a bar on the plaster and misses the seal by a hand's width.

The seal does not need the light to be seen. It is darker than the wall by being pressed in.

He stands squared to it. The vertical mark is centered. His breath does not stir the plaster.

Extended sequence

Minutes pass as the bar of day moving that hand's width closer to the circle and as the mark refusing to be only decoration. The coat on the chair does not slip yet. The downward stair is empty.

No other step comes up from below. He does not call out to ask who stamped the wall. The vertical mark inside the seal shifts.

Figures in the frame

It sat centered a breath ago. It leans, by a degree a person could deny, toward the side of the landing where he stands. He changes sides to test it.

The mark eases back through center and leans again, following. The attention is mutual. He feels it as a pressure behind the eyes, not as a voice.

Codex fragment

When he lifts his face, the seal is still aimed at him. The sleeve on the floor twitches once, a small further slip, and goes still. The mark answers that twitch by leaning a degree more toward the chair, past the angle it used when he sat. He stands, sets the coat back on the chair with care, and leaves by the downward stair without giving the mark a bow or a challenge.

The scenario is filed in the Codex.

Sound of Imagination

The landing keeps the chair. The seal remains on the plaster, turned toward the empty chair. The coat sleeve hangs still, and the mark does not relax into neutrality. The bar of day finally reaches the circle and does not straighten the mark back to center.

Showcase

He steps away to the chair and sits so that he is no longer squared to the seal. The mark turns a fraction more, toward the chair, toward the place his face now occupies.

The coat sleeve slips to the floor. He does not pick it up. He looks at his shoes.

The Craft

He is gone down the stair for a full minute the landing can feel as silence. The coat he set back stays folded.

The sleeve he lifted does not slip again. The vertical mark holds the lean it took toward the empty chair, a degree past comfort, and the plaster around the circle does not smooth itself.

Read it as written. The scenario.
