Smoke Over the Ledger
Key art
Prologue
Six seconds · ledger smoke
Smoke sits on a ledger. Columns of numbers. Gold lamp. Paper is the weather. Objects keep memory longer than people admit.
The smoke writes a name. The numbers bleed into a stain. The film ends where explanation would only make the silence thinner.

Synopsis
Mystery Noir · Standalone
Someone kept a book the way careful people keep books. Date, what the money was for, what it did to the total. A brass lamp. Rain at the glass. Then smoke sat on the open pages and began to do a second kind of handwriting, one the clerk had not been taught. The totals lose their nerve. The wood under the book takes a stain that will not be a number again.
There is blood in that stain, or something the lamp is determined to call blood. The film does not stage a body to explain it. A body would be a relief. You could file a body. You cannot file a column that has climbed out of the page and lain down on the desk.
The smoke writes a name. You are not given the letters. Being close enough to see that a name is being written, and not close enough to use it, is the whole ordeal. Paper is the weather in this room. People are what the weather passes through.
Extended sequence
After the cut
After the last shot the book is still open. Nobody blots it. An extra minute is the smoke thinning and then thinking better of thinning. The stain on the desk does not shrink when the smoke does. It has already changed countries. It lives in the wood now.
If you were hoping the last page would add the columns up, the last page is the stain. Addition was the book’s old religion. It has converted.
The close view stays on the wood. The numbers have left the paper. The extra minute does not invite them back.
A wider room, not this office. The columns are still pretending to be columns.
The spiral is what the smoke does when nobody is left to read. The name is still not on the page.

Who remains
No clerk is shown at the chair. The absence is not a trick. A face would have given you someone to suspect, and suspicion is a tidier feeling than the one the smoke is after. The name in the loops is not a character with a childhood. It is a shape.
A dossier would start from the gutter of the book, where the smoke prefers to sit, and would stop at the first total that no longer matches the lines above it. That mismatch is the cast.
Codex fragment
Filed with the room
The sentence the camera would not hold: the books were honest until the smoke arrived. Honest, here, means they agreed with each other. It does not mean they agreed with what was done to earn them.
The scrap is with the Fragments. It will not decode the loops. Decoding would turn weather back into an account.
Sound of Imagination
Residual
Paper expanding in damp air. A low burn, not a fire you can see. The little tick of a lamp cooling when the bulb is sure of itself. No cello to tell you a secret is being revealed. The secret is already on the desk, and it is illegible on purpose.
Residual belongs to Sound of Imagination when a recording is actually made. This one is not made yet. The room is still smoking.
The Craft
Image · motion · sound
Key art of the ledger stays the key. The open book under the brass lamp, the stain, the hung study with the spiral: those are later minutes of the same weather. Motion should be smoke and almost nothing else. A sudden face would be a different film.
The working notes sit with The Craft.

Darkness & Psyche · Mystery Noir
Smoke Over the Ledger is filed under Darkness & Psyche in Mystery Noir. It does not explain the missing hour and it does not introduce the lie. Same night. Different object.
The screening waits on the cut. The book does not wait. It is already open.

Mark · keep · letter
Released rooms keep a mark from one to five, a keep on this device, and letters that stay with the page after the feed has moved on. Smoke Over the Ledger is ready.
