Silent Prophecy

A prophecy without words

Key art

A village under a sky of birds that have taken the shape of an arrow

Mythic / Legend · Standalone · Upcoming

Prologue

Birds over the roofs lock together until they are an arrow pointing past the lane. The weather turns with them: a wind from the quarter no one uses, shadows laid too long for the hour on the clock by the well.

One line

Before the synopsis

At the field's edge a woman writes in a journal that is already full.

Synopsis

The future does not speak. It arranges.

The lines are another hand's, slanted to the same angle as the arrow. Birds crowd the nearest window and turn when the flock turns, all at one instant.

The clock by the well keeps a plausible hour and the shadows refuse it. They stretch from the well-coping across the lane and do not shorten. The wind presses the grass one way, the unused quarter, and the birds do not fight it.

Her pen moves, and the ink that appears is not the shape her fingers are drawing. The slant on the page still matches the slant in the sky.

Extended sequence

After the cut

A hand still writing in a journal that is already full, birds at the window

Minutes pass as the arrow holding and as the pen failing to be the author of the line. She tears forward to a page that should be clean.

Sentences are waiting on it before the pen comes down. The nib hovers and does not touch. A single black feather drops into the gutter of the book and stays.

Figures in the frame

Who remains

The witness at the field's edge, pages in hand, birds turning over the roofs

It lies along the same slant as the sentences. The arrow of birds swings a finger's width toward the road that leaves the village.

Shutters that hung even sit a little off their hooks, ordinary things pulled into the same wrong alignment. The feather in the gutter turns that same finger's width, though her hand does not touch it, and then lies still. A shutter ticks farther off its hook and stops, not falling, only more wrong.

Codex fragment

Filed with the room

The future does not speak. It arranges. Anyone who tries to write the arrangement down arrives after the page. Fragments

The long shadow of the coping covers one more stone and holds there. She closes the journal on the feather. The pages stay shut under her palm.

The scenario is filed in the Codex.

Sound of Imagination

Residual

Rain on glass. A nib that never reaches the paper. Many wings, close. A page unsticking itself from the table. Sound of Imagination

The birds at the window hold their turn with the flock. A last shutter, the small one by the lane, sits off true and does not correct itself. Wind from the unused quarter keeps the grass bent.

Showcase

Object from the universe

The journal and one black feather

The journal, open, the foreign hand still shining, a feather on the margin. Taken off the table. The Showcase

The sentences on the clean page do not add a word after she stops. The ink is already dry.

She does not scratch a line through them. The clock by the well ticks into a minute the shadows will not accept.

The Craft

Image · motion · sound

Silent Prophecy — the earlier key still

Ordinary things in the wrong order are the still. Motion is the birds completing a letter, and ink that was wet before the witness arrived. The residual is the feather. The Craft

No one comes out to set a hook back. The road out of the village takes the arrow's new aim and does not fill with a traveler.

The birds hold the arrow over the roofs, and the lane beneath them lies a degree off true.

Read it as written. The scenario.

The next room

After this filing

The closed journal keeps the feather at the slant of the sentences, and the clock cannot pull the long shadows back. The next room is The Bone That Keeps the Pass.
