Scenario
2:57 · 16:9
Golden signs form in the air between broken columns and light themselves in order, one after another. Each sign takes its light from the one before and does not hurry the next. A watcher stands at the edge of the steps with a stone disc in both hands and does not cross into the row. In the ruined wall a zodiac ring burns sign by sign until one section of the ring stays dark. The disc is cracked along the same order of signs. One section of it is gone. Embers tick in the break. The missing section is a gap the hands can feel and cannot fill.
Small fires answer from the temple steps below, one fire for each sign that has caught, set in an even line on the stone. The step that should answer the dark sign stays cold and bare. Another sign lights overhead. Another small fire takes on the next tread. The gap does not catch. Heat from the neighboring fires reaches the edge of the bare step and does not cross it. Embers in the disc brighten, then settle deeper into the crack and hold there. A hair of the crack lengthens toward the next sign and stops short of it, a small further break that follows the settling embers and does not complete the missing section.
The watcher keeps the disc and stays outside the fires. The ring burns in the wall with one sign left black. The step-fires hold their line without spreading, and the missing answer remains a width of bare stone. One small fire leans toward the gap and straightens again without crossing. Columns stay broken. The order overhead continues only where it has already lit. The dark section stays dark. The watcher's thumbs stay on the disc's rim and do not try to press the crack shut.
Embers hold deep in the break and do not jump to the bare step. The golden signs that have lit stay lit in their order. The one unlit section of the ring stays a black width in the wall. The watcher does not step between the fires to stand where the missing answer would be. Night keeps the ruin, and the bare stone keeps the width that will not catch.
The watcher does not trade the cracked disc for a place among the step-fires. Both hands stay on the stone. The hairline that lengthened in the crack stays short of the next sign. Embers stay deep and tick no louder. Overhead, the lit signs hold their order and do not lend light to the black section of the ring. Below, the bare step stays cold between fires that have agreed not to spread. Broken columns do not repair themselves into a wall that could explain the gap. The lean a small fire attempted toward the gap is over, and the fire stands straight in its own place. Night does not add a sign the disc is missing. The width of bare stone remains the width of the answer that did not come, and the watcher remains outside it.
