INT. STATEMENT OFFICE — DAY

Pim Harrow numbers testimony at a desk where a recording machine idles and tapes are stacked like unused evidence. The top sheet is headed for a witness. The line for the number is empty. He opens the drawer where witness one should live if a first witness had ever existed. The drawer holds blank cards and a spare reel. No prior statement. No signature to inherit. The blank cards are lined up and equally blank. The spare reel has never been threaded.

He looks once at the chair meant for a witness. It stays empty. The cushion keeps a dent from nobody present. Inventing a first person to make zero feel like a sequel would end the honesty of the page. He does not. He writes a single figure where the number goes: 0. The pen squeaks. He dates the hour and leaves the testimony lines blank beneath the figure, because zero is the statement, not a preface to a voice. The blank lines stay ruled and unused. He does not write a sentence under them to soften the figure.

The machine's reels do not turn. He is not catching a confession. He is numbering an absence as if the count itself were the witness. The ink of the zero spreads a hair after he lifts the pen, thickening the figure without turning it into another number. That thickening follows the writing and stays a zero. The spare reel in the drawer rolls an inch and stops, still not recording. He sets the page on the tapes, figure showing, and caps the pen. No one comes in to become witness one.

The page numbered zero lies on the tapes, unsigned, with no earlier witness beneath it. The cap stays on the pen. The empty chair stays empty. The drawer stays open on blank cards and a reel that rolled an inch and then refused any further work. Daylight on the desk does not invent a signature. The idling machine stays idle. Zero remains the whole statement the office was willing to number.

Pim does not start the machine to see if silence would count as a voice. The ruled lines under the figure stay blank. The stacked tapes stay stacked. The thickened zero dries as a zero, and no one arrives to sit, to sign, or to become the first witness the drawer does not contain.

The heading on the page still says it is for a witness, and the only witness it receives is the figure he wrote. Blank cards in the open drawer do not acquire names while he sits. The spare reel does not roll a second inch. Tapes under the page keep their stacked silence and do not begin to turn because a zero is resting on them. Pim's hands stay off the machine. The cushion of the empty chair keeps a dent that belongs to no one in the room. He does not date a second hour underneath the first to suggest that time itself might become a voice. The squeak of the pen is over. The office keeps an idle recorder, a capped pen, an unsigned page, and a number that is not the start of a count but the count.
