EXT. OPEN ROAD — NIGHT

A woman walks with a folded star map and a small lantern. The road runs straight between dark fields. The constellations sit where the map has them. She checks once, folds the paper, and continues toward a far cluster of town lights. The lantern throws a small circle on the packed earth. Her shoes keep the straight line. Nothing in the fields moves.

The stars move. They unhook and gather into a geometry that is not a map and not a shape to walk home by. Any line between them would cross the road at angles no path can use. Her lantern flame leans toward that figure though the air is still. The lean is steady. The flame does not gutter. She stops walking while the stars finish gathering. The town lights ahead stay a cluster for one more moment.

She turns. The road behind her has broken into the same geometry, packed earth in hard joins, a junction that the straight road does not explain. She lifts the map. The printed stars crawl until they match the sky, and the road's name smears off the corner of the sheet. A mileage number beside the name smears after it and stops, still not a path, a second loss on the paper that follows the first and leaves her with a sheet that agrees with the wrong sky. She stops in the junction. One branch aims at the town lights. Those lights rearrange as she watches, joining the figure overhead. She takes neither branch.

The sky holds the wrong shape. The lantern burns upright again. The ground under her shoes keeps the new angle. Soot from the upright flame marks the map in a spot that matches no printed star. She does not fold the sheet back into a lie of straightness. Both branches wait. Neither takes her foot. The fields stay dark on every side of the new joins, and the geometry overhead does not ungather.

The woman lowers the map without folding it. Soot on the sheet stays a mark that belongs to the lantern and not to any constellation the paper used to trust. The smeared road name does not rewrite itself. The smeared mileage does not become a distance she can walk. Hard joins in the packed earth hold the angles no straight road explained. The town lights, now part of the figure overhead, do not drop back into a cluster at the end of a branch. The lantern, upright, throws its small circle on the junction and does not lean again. Wind does not arrive to excuse the earlier lean. She remains where the branches divide and chooses neither. The dark fields keep their dark. The sky keeps the geometry it gathered, and the ground under her shoes keeps the new angle it took from that gathering.
