INT. SORTING ROOM — DAY

Ruthen Gale stands between two piles on a long table, a lamp at her elbow, manila sleeves warped from handling. A cull has already happened. She did not keep what deserved keeping. She kept what survived. The keep pile is thin: a blank card, a page with a grocery column, a strip of oxide tape still in its shell. The discard side is thicker with damp, torn, unreadable sheets that might once have mattered more. The lamp lights both piles the same way and does not prefer the thin one.

She lifts a ruined page from the discard, the kind of page a careful person would rescue for its weight of names. The names are gone into the stain. She tries to read a stroke and the stroke is only stain. The page breaks along a wet fold when she tries to flatten it. The sound is soft. She sets the pieces back on the discard side. Merit does not get a vote. Survival already voted. A fragment near the keep pile slides closer when she sets the pieces down, and she does not move it across. The fragment stays on the discard side, almost touching the survivors and not joining them.

She squares the keep pile. Nothing in it explains itself. The grocery column is intact and trivial. The blank card is intact and empty. The oxide shell clicks once as she squares it, and a hair more of the tape end shows, and she does not draw the tape out to play it. She does not swap the survivors for the ruined names. She binds the survivors with a string, writes nothing on the top sheet about worth, and leaves the lamp on the string. The string darkens where the lamp warms it, a small change that follows the binding and does not become a judgment written down.

The keep pile is the thin one. No mark on it says these pages earned their place. The discard stays thicker. The broken page stays broken. The lamp stays on the darkened string, and the blank card stays blank inside the binding, intact for no reason the table is willing to announce.

Ruthen does not untie the string to reconsider. The darkened bit of string stays dark where the lamp has warmed it, and the rest of the string stays ordinary. Inside the binding, the grocery column remains trivial and whole. The blank card remains empty and whole. The oxide shell remains a shell, the extra hair of tape still showing, still unplayed. On the discard side the broken page stays in two pieces, names still lost in the stain. The fragment that slid close does not cross the gap. Warped manila sleeves stay warped. She does not write a reason on a top sheet that was kept only because it survived. The lamp does not move. The thin pile stays the thin pile, and the thicker ruin stays the thicker ruin.
