INT. YEAR ROOM — DAY

Levin Dusk keeps a calendar that will not advance its weather. Rain ticks the same way at the window as it did on the matching date a year ago. The glass is already streaked in the same places. He is alone with a ritual bowl; water in it holds the same grey the sky is wearing, and a single wet leaf floats where a leaf floated then. The leaf turns a slow circle. A ceremony of one is still a ceremony. He does not treat the likeness as a failure to be improved. He sets the bowl so the leaf's circle stays inside the rim and does not climb out.

He turns the calendar to the new date and writes it in a clear hand. The new date is only a date. Beside it he begins a fresh weather mark, something that would prove the year had moved: clearing, frost, a drier wind. The pencil makes the hopeful word and stops. The window refuses him. Rain continues in the same slant. He looks from the bowl to the glass and back. The leaf turns the same slow circle. A second circuit matches the first so closely that the water's surface does not even change its grey. He crosses out the hopeful weather word until only the old word remains, the one the sky is actually doing. The crossing-out is heavy. The old word is still readable underneath the refusal of the new one.

Return is the year. He sets the pen down and does not congratulate the match. Damp from the window reaches the crossed-out word and blurs it until the hopeful letters are only a smear, a second change that follows the refusal and leaves the old word standing. The leaf completes another identical circle. The bowl stays full of the same grey. The calendar shows a new date wearing last year's rain. The pen lies parallel to the page. Rain does not alter its slant to honor the new date.

The new date is written. The weather beside it is the weather that refused to change. The smear of the hopeful word dries where the damp put it, unreadable, and the leaf keeps the circle it has always kept in this room.

Levin does not turn the calendar back to hide the new date, and he does not write a second hopeful word beside the smear. The pen stays parallel to the page. Rain ticks the glass in the same places as before. The ritual bowl does not overflow and does not sink. Grey water matches grey sky with no ceremony left to perform beyond the one he already kept. The leaf's circle does not widen. The window does not clear a roofline or a change in the slant. The old weather word, still readable, is the only weather the room is willing to host. He stays with the bowl. The matching date of last year is not on the page anymore, and yet the glass behaves as if that date had never left.
