Noll Graves treats silence as if it were speech, and he does it on paper, not with a confession. A tape is threaded. The reels are full enough to make a measured length and no more. He puts the headphones on, hears the flatness, and watches the meter refuse to rise. The needle sits at the bottom of its travel and trembles only with the machine, not with a voice. No one is in the chair across from him. The chair holds its shape and a little dust on the seat. He does not ask a question meant to drag a voice out of the quiet. He lets the reel run its measured length. The take-up reel turns. The supply reel gives. Nothing in the room changes its volume to meet them.
When the length is done he stops the transport. The room is the same room. The headphones still hold the flatness for a moment after the reels stop, and then that flatness is only the room. He opens the log and writes the entry in the form used for statements: hour, duration, source. The pen moves at a clerk's pace. In the space where words would be quoted he draws a line and writes silence, as a clerk would write the content of a speech. He does not invent sentences the tape did not have. The recording is the statement. His voice is not. He reads the line back without speaking it. The word stays the word he wrote.
The ink of that word dries lighter than the hour and the duration beside it, a small difference that follows the entry and does not correct it. He does not trace the word again to darken it. The meter needle, still at the bottom, lifts a hair and returns, though the transport is stopped and no sound arrived to spend the lift. He lets the needle finish its return.
He returns the headphones to the hook. The leader stays threaded, ready for the same nothing. He closes the log on that entry and leaves his hand off it. Nothing in the room performs a reveal. The empty chair stays empty. The dust on the seat is not disturbed. The meter rests at the bottom of its travel.
Noll leaves the log closed. The lighter ink of the word he chose does not darken as it dries the rest of the way. Hour and duration stay darker beside it, a clerk's ordinary pressure, and the source line stays what he wrote. The headphones on their hook do not swing. The threaded leader does not creep. Across the bench the empty chair keeps its dust. No second reel is started to tempt a voice into the same measured length. The needle rests. The room keeps the volume it had when the transport stopped.
The silent reel stays threaded. The entry beside it records only the length of the quiet.
