Numbered arches cross a concrete hall. People in grey coats pass under them while a counter above each arch clicks. The numbers are the only bright things in the bays. No one speaks to the counters. The building does the counting. Coats brush coats and do not slow for it. At the far end a stair is visible only as a change in the light, and no one in the lit arches turns toward it.
At arch 12 the counter reaches the limit stamped in the lintel. The digits settle on the stamped number and do not climb past it. A slab lowers, smooth and even. A woman is mid-step. The slab meets the floor in front of her shoe. She stops. The shoe that was going forward stays where the concrete arrived. Behind the slab, the counter resets, and the next line moves in a hall she cannot enter. Her bay's lamps go out. The other arches stay lit and keep their click. She can hear the reset counter start again at the far side of the slab, a small bright sound with no lamp to go with it.
She puts her palm on the slab. The concrete is warm from the lamps that just died. The warmth is even, not a hotspot, not a seam. The slab does not rise. She waits. The warmth fades by a degree and then holds, a second change that follows the lowering and does not become an opening. A side door opens in her dark bay, not back into the bright hall, and shows a stair going down. The door swings past the latch and stops. A cooler air comes up the stair and moves the hem of her coat. She does not take it. Her palm stays.
People continue under the lit arches. Their coats do not brush the dark bay. One coat passes close enough that she hears the cloth, and the cloth does not turn. The click of the far counters carries, soft and regular. The side door eases a fraction wider and stops again, still unused. The stair remains a darker dark inside the dark bay. Her shoe has not crossed onto the first step.
The degree of warmth under her palm does not climb back to what the lamps left. It holds. The reset counter behind the slab clicks through a number she is no longer in, and the digits, if they shine, shine for the line she cannot join. Grey coats keep their pace in the lit bays. None of them looks into the dark one. The side door does not shut on its own and does not open far enough to become an invitation she accepts. Her mid-step stays a stopped step. The stamped limit on the lintel remains the limit. The concrete does not develop a seam under her hand.
Her hand remains on the warm slab. Arch 12 stays dark. The stair stays open beside her, unused, while the hall beyond the concrete keeps taking its number.
