INT. OFFERING ROOM — NIGHT

A stone bowl sits on a low altar. Its lid, a disc of the same pale stone, lies on the floor beside a woman's bare feet. The disc is heavy enough that the floor holds a faint circle of dust where it was set down. She looks down into the bowl. It is empty, and the empty shows another room underneath: the same altar, smaller, the same lid on that floor, a bowl nested inside the bowl. The smaller room is lit the way this one is lit, by no lamp she can find. She does not cover the bowl to stop the view of it.

She leaves it uncovered. She waits with her hands at her sides while the stone cools nothing and warms nothing. Then she reaches in up to the wrist. Her fingers pass the rim and appear, small, in the lower room, hovering over the smaller bowl. The smaller lid stays on that lower floor. A hand rises from the smaller altar and sets nothing she can name into the emptiness. The nothing has weight. The bowl dips on the stone and rights itself. The dip rings a low sound out of the altar and the sound ends. She draws her hand back. Her fingers are dry. The lower room stays at the bottom, a little deeper than before, as if the weight had pushed the nested altar down by a finger's depth.

She stands with the emptiness still open. The bowl dips a second time, shallower, and rights itself again. No second hand rises. The smaller dip follows the first and spends what the nothing still weighs. Down in the lower room the smaller bowl shifts on its altar by the same shallow amount and goes still. She lifts the lid, holds it above the bowl long enough to cover it, and does not set it on. The disc darkens the mouth of the bowl while she holds it, and the lower room remains visible at the edges of the shadow. She sets the lid back on the floor. It finds the same dust circle and settles inside it. Her hands fall to her sides. The offering remains open.

The bowl steadies. Her feet do not move the disc. Down inside the bowl the other room waits, uncovered, and the smaller lid lies where it still leaves that lower bowl clear. The depth she added by reaching does not climb back up to meet her.

She does not reach in a second time. The smaller hand does not rise again to set a second nothing into the bowl. The pale disc on the floor keeps the dust circle it found, and her bare feet stay beside it without sliding the stone. Time in the room is only the stillness of the altar and the depth that does not climb back. The nested lid remains where it leaves the lower bowl clear. Nothing is named into the emptiness, and the emptiness keeps the weight it already proved.

The upper bowl stays empty of anything that can be named, and the lower room keeps the depth the weight gave it.
