INT. NIGHT WORKROOM — NIGHT

Wren Hollow sits under a single bulb with a paper in her hands. She reads it once. The page is an outcome already settled, a line of figures and a name, nothing she can argue. She folds it on the crease it already owns and does not reach for a second opinion, a telephone, or another lamp. Around her are machines other people threw out: a fan with a new cord, a radio with its back still open, a coil of clean wire. The bulb is harsh on the paper and kind to nothing else. The open radio shows its parts and does not play.

She sets the folded paper on the bench and looks at the coil. The wire is clean, new against the tired fan. Her hands know the motions before she begins. Minutes pass as the bulb humming and as her not reaching for the telephone that sits dark at the end of the bench. She does not unfold the paper to read the figures again. The name on it stays inside the fold. The workroom door is shut. No one comes up the outer stair to change the outcome.

She takes the coil because her hands know the work. She wraps it tight, the way she wraps parts that must survive a trip, and binds it with the twine she uses for repairs that are not rescues. The bundle would not change a chart. She knows that. She makes the parcel anyway, neat at the corners, and writes no message on the outside. The folded paper goes into her pocket, not into the bundle. Kindness, here, is unfinished duty carried one step past the hour when the room can still be saved. The twine bites. She knots it twice. The knot is plain.

She turns the bulb off, feels her way to the outer stair, and sets the parcel on the step where a hand coming up in the morning will find it without needing her voice. She does not wait beside it. Her footsteps leave the stair. In the dark the parcel's twine tightens as the coil settles, a small further bite, not a new knot. The bulb's filament keeps a last red point and then that point dies. The tightening follows the setting-down. No note appears on the stair beside the bundle.

The wrapped coil remains on the concrete in the dark, squared to the wall, with no one left in the workroom to explain it. The paper stays in her pocket, wherever her steps have taken it. The step keeps the parcel and does not grow a message overnight while the dark is still the same dark.

The outer stair keeps the parcel squared to the wall. Concrete takes the small cold of the night and does not take an explanation. Inside the workroom the fan with the new cord sits where other people left it. The open radio stays open and silent. The telephone stays dark. Her pocket, gone down the street or only down the stair, keeps the folded outcome. The coil on the step remains neat at the corners. Morning is not here to find it, and the dark does not unwrap the twine to see what duty looks like when it is only wire.
