INT. BOARDS BESIDE AN EMPTY DOORWAY — DAY

A cracked gold icon is nailed to dark boards. An empty doorway stands beside it. Salt already whitens the painted cheek. Day falls across the boards and not through the doorway, because the doorway gives onto nothing that takes light. The nail at the top of the icon is dark. The crack runs from the brow toward the mouth and holds a first dusting of white. No sleeve shows in the opening. No step sounds beyond it.

The salt on the cheek thickens before it travels. It sits in the paint like a tear that has chosen mineral over water. Minutes pass as that thickening, and as the doorway staying empty, and as the boards around the icon staying dry. A draft from the opening moves a thread of cobweb and does not move the icon on its nail. The gold leaf at the edge of the crack stays stuck down. No hand comes to wipe the cheek.

A line of salt leaves the eye. It does not stop at the paint. It runs the crack, crosses the gold, and reaches the bare wood under the nail. Another line follows the first. The face, lifted at the cheek, no longer sits inside the paint's edge. The white gathers in the break where the cheek has risen, thick where the paint could not hold it. A small shard of the icon loosens. Gold leaf stays on the shard. Salt sits in its crack. The shard rests against the boards and does not fall farther.

The rest of the icon remains nailed. The salt does not dry. It keeps a slow line from the eye to the wood, and the wood darkens under it. On the bare board the line forks. One fork stops after a finger's length. The other continues, slower, toward the doorway, and does not reach the opening. The fork follows the first line and does not turn back to the eye. A corner of gold leaf on the shard lifts and does not peel off.

The doorway stays empty. No sleeve, no hand, no second face comes through it. The salt on the boards shines and does not turn back toward the eye. The shard leans where it landed. The crack in the gold holds its white. The doorway holds nothing, and the line of salt does not finish.

The stopped fork stays stopped. The icon stays nailed. Salt keeps leaving the eye for the wood, and the empty doorway does not answer it with a person.

Day on the boards moves a little and does not dry the salt. The nail holds. The lifted cheek stays lifted, paint edge left behind. Gold leaf at the shard's corner trembles in the draft from the doorway and settles flat again, still attached. The fork that stopped does not start. The longer line darkens the wood a shade more and still fails to reach the opening. Nothing in the doorway acquires a sleeve. The icon continues its slow mineral weep with no one opposite it to wipe the cheek or to finish the line.
