INT. LISTENING ROOM — NIGHT

Consoles are awake under a dome. Ferns grow between valves. Beyond the glass, a dish stands in the snow, and the dish is the only weather that matters. An operator sits at the boards. The send key is capped. Snow moves on the dish and slides off the rim in small falls. The cap over the key is dull metal, seated, not a thing her fingers test. Lamps on the boards are steady. The round glass in front of her is empty of any line.

She keeps her hands on the desk, not on the key. A fern frond between two valves stirs when the room's air stirs and then is still. Minutes pass as snow on the dish and as the logbook lying closed under her elbow. The stair at the side of the dome holds no one yet. She does not uncap the key to ask the dish a question. The dish keeps listening in the snow without her help.

On the round glass, a line draws itself. It is not a reflection of the lamps. It completes into a waveform the room did not send. The operator checks the log. The log already contains the drawing, timestamped before her hand reached the book. She does not uncap the key. The ink in the log is dry. Her arrival at the page is late to a note the book already finished. The waveform holds. A smaller peak adds itself at the end of the line and then the line is finished again, no further peak. The addition follows the drawing and does not become a message she is willing to answer.

A figure stands on the stair, the dish still outside, and does not look back at it. Snow moves around the dish and not around the drawn line. The waveform holds its shape when the lamps flicker and does not copy them. A fern frond leans toward a warm valve and stops short of the metal. The operator's hands leave the boards. The capped key stays capped. The figure on the stair stays facing the upper dark of the dome.

The reply remains on the round glass. Ferns between the valves stay still. Outside, the dish stands in the snow, listening toward a message the room has not sent and has already written down. The smaller peak stays part of the line. The log stays open to a timestamp her hand did not make.

Snow keeps sliding off the dish. The figure on the stair does not turn. The capped key throws back a little of the lamp, and the round glass keeps a reply no one in the room agreed to transmit.

The dome keeps its dark above the stair. Valves tick as they cool and do not tick in the shape of the line. The operator does not pull the log toward her to add a correction under the dry ink. Snow on the outer glass melts in a thin run and does not touch the dish. The figure's coat does not turn. Between the valves the ferns hold the lean they took and grow no closer to the metal. The round glass stays lit by the line the room did not send, and the capped key stays a refusal with a dull shine.
