The Chair in the Stack

Order

Floor forty-seven, an even day, so the elevator works. The landing light does not pretend the hall is full. Inside the unit the chair is pushed back from the table, the cup is clean, the bed is made. The registry says nine vacant years. Kael Voss stands in the doorway and does not cross it.

Even day, so he arrives by elevator, not by the stairs. The stairs are an odd-day matter and they have a neighbour on them. Neither is this shot. The landing light is practical and a little dim. Do not correct it.

The edit

Two fingers on the chair back. The wood is not warm. He takes the fingers away. The chair keeps the posture without him. He does not sit, because sitting would finish a gesture that belongs to someone the registry cannot name. He leaves the cup where it is.

He does not cross the threshold. Two fingers, then the fingers leave. If he sits, the picture has finished someone else's exit for them. Cut before any impulse to sit becomes a movement.

What is left

The picture is the doorway and the chair. The stairs on an odd day, and the neighbour who says the unit was never empty, are not this shot.

The registry stays wrong. Do not show him correcting it. A correction would be a happier film. This one ends on the chair, still pushed back, with nobody in it.
