Colonists in plain suits stand on a vast dark plain. There is no wind. The ground itself breathes. It swells, holds, and sinks, slow enough to watch. They map it that way. At each high point they plant a thin flag, and when the ground sinks the flags lean. A woman holds the next flag in her glove and watches the dust. The plain's breath lifts her boots a little and sets them down. No one speaks a count aloud. The suits are pale with dust at the knees.
A board on stakes shows contour lines drawn from the last breath. The lines match the flags. She waits with the next flag in her glove and does not plant it early. The swell this time is the one the board already knows. Flags lean out and stand back up as the ground returns. Minutes pass as that known breath completing itself, a long hold at the top, a slow sink, and her glove staying closed around the unused flag. Dust hangs and falls back. The board does not erase itself yet.
The next breath comes from the side, early, and shorter. Flags topple toward a new center. A seam opens in the dust. Warm vapor rises in one pale column and then the seam closes over it. The board's lines erase themselves and redraw around the place the vapor was, tighter than any circle the crew has planted. The redraw is faint and then stronger. A toppled flag rolls a hand's width and stops with its tip aimed more exactly at the new center than the fall had aimed it. That small correction follows the redraw. She does not stake the flag in her glove to join them.
No one plants the flag in her hand. The plain sinks and begins another rise under their boots, on the new rhythm. The redrawn contours glow faintly. Dust lifts around the boots before any of them mark the rise with a stake. The unused flag stays fabric and stick, not a point on the board. The seam does not open a second time. The vapor is already gone.
The flags lie pointing inward. The unused flag stays in her glove. The board keeps the new center, and the ground's next breath lifts the dust around their boots before any of them mark it. The glow on the contours holds. No new stake goes into the plain.
The new rise under their boots is shorter than the breath the board used to know, and it arrives from the side again. Suits creak when knees take the lift. No one laughs at the creak. The woman turns the unused flag in her glove so the tip points down, ready, and still does not drive it in. Faint glow on the redrawn lines pulses with the ground and does not spread past the stakes. Dust settles on the toppled flags in the sink and lifts again at the next rise, and the plain does not return to the older center.
