FADE IN:

INT. CORNER ROOM — NIGHT

A man hangs his coat on a hook and turns from the door. The coat is on the hook and still buttoned on his shoulders. He stops between the two and touches neither. The far corner meets at an angle tighter than the rest of the house. Both walls stand nearer than the length of the floor between them. A table occupies the ordinary part of the room. A lamp on it burns steady. The door behind him is shut. His breath shows once in the cooler air near the joint and not in the air by the table.

He looks from one coat to the other. The sleeves on the hook hang empty and buttoned. The sleeves on his arms are the same buttons, the same cloth. He does not unbutton either. Minutes pass as the lamp and as the corner seeming, without a measurement yet, to be closer than the boards allow. The floorboards run toward the joint and appear to stop early. He does not step in. He takes a measuring tape from the table and lets it lie in his hand, coiled.

He runs out a measuring tape toward the joint. The metal end meets the tape's own body before it reaches the plaster, kissing itself in open air. He reels it in. A number is worn blank on the ribbon where the kiss happened. He looks at the blank. The numbers on either side are still there. He does not write the missing one back. The lamp does not flicker. The coat on the hook does not swing yet.

He is standing by the table, and then he is sitting in the angle, back to the joint, with no crossing of the room between the two positions. The door stays shut. The coat on the hook swings as though a body has gone past. He has not gone past. The coat on his shoulders does not move. The blank on the ribbon spreads. The number beside it thins until it is only a ghost of ink, and then that ghost is gone too. The walls at his shoulders are closer than they were when he was standing by the table. His sleeves brush plaster on both sides. He does not lean forward to escape them.

He remains in the corner. Both coats stay. The tape lies coiled on the floor where his reel let it go, its end tucked under its own length, and the walls hold him closer than the room does. The lamp by the table burns for the empty place he left. The second blank on the ribbon does not fill itself back in.

The door does not open to explain the swing of the hooked coat. Its buttons catch the lamp and let it go. He cannot bring his elbows forward without meeting cloth and plaster together. The coiled tape on the floor keeps the end tucked under itself. The ghosted number does not return. The lamp burns for a standing man who is no longer standing there, and the corner keeps the seated one.
