INT. STATION BAR — NIGHT

The bar sits behind a bulkhead that official charts leave blank. On the wall, a station chart has an empty circle where a name would be. Stools face a counter. Glasses stand upside down on a towel, and no one turns one up. People talk in low voices, each of them between somewhere and somewhere else, coats still on. Bags rest at their boots. The port shows docking lights in a steady amber, and the amber is the color of a pause, not of an arrival anyone stands up for.

The murmur stays small. A hand turns a coaster and lets it lie. No one reaches for a glass. The upside-down rims catch the amber and give it back in rings on the towel. Minutes pass as that low talk and as the lights holding. The empty circle on the chart stays empty. A traveler with a bag between the feet watches the port and does not lift the bag yet. The talk does not name a ship. The bulkhead gives a soft tick as the station works, and no one treats the tick as a call.

Through the port, the docking lights burn amber. The voices keep a small steady murmur. The lights change to white. Every mouth closes at the same moment. Hands rest on the counter. No one finishes a sentence. The white is flat and without warmth. In it, the upside-down glasses look like a row of unused bells. The chart's empty circle does not fill itself with a word. Coats stay on. The murmur does not leak back in around the closed mouths.

The lights shift to a pattern that is not on the painted legend beside the port. Stripes of white and a gap, then a repeat, nothing the legend's painted key can name. One traveler stands, bag in hand, ready for a ship that the legend does not list. The stool creaks and is the loudest thing in the room. The lights snap back to amber. The traveler sits. The bag is no longer in that hand. It rests on a different stool, straps neat, set down by someone who is no longer in the room.

The strap on that bag slips one notch and stops, neat still, only lower. The empty circle on the chart darkens a shade, as if a name had almost arrived and thought better of it. No new voice starts. The traveler's empty hand stays on the counter where the bag handle was. The towel under the glasses does not get turned. Amber lays a stripe across the counter and stops at the wrists. No one pulls a hand back.

Mouths stay closed. The upside-down glasses stay upside down. Amber holds outside. The bag remains on the wrong stool, and the empty circle on the chart stays unnamed. The slipped strap does not climb back to its old hole.
