INT. KITCHEN — NIGHT

Two adults finish a night they have finished many times. Plates are rinsed and set whole in the rack. Glasses stand upright, unchipped, catching the small lamp. Nothing is broken to prove the night occurred. The man dries his hands. The woman turns the burner knob she already checked, a repeated care, and hangs the towel square. They do not gather a speech in the doorway. A speech would lie about how a night like this actually ends.

Water ticks in the drain and then stops. The rack holds the plates in a row, edges not touching hard enough to click. The glasses throw small copies of the lamp and do not tremble. The kettle on the stove is light in her hand when she lifts it, nearly empty. Minutes pass as the ordinary last motions: a crumb brushed into her palm, the palm emptied into the bin, the counter wiped once and left. He folds the dry cloth over the oven handle. Neither of them fills the quiet with a summing-up.

She pours the last of the kettle into a flask for the morning and caps it. The cap seats with a small turn. He switches the overhead off. The lamp by the sink remains, then she turns that down too, not as a verdict, as the next ordinary motion. They stand for a moment in the dim with their shoulders not touching and not far. He nods at the rack, meaning the work is done. She nods back. He goes down the hall to the bedroom. She stays one breath longer, hand on the counter, then follows. The doorway empties without a sentence left inside it.

In the kitchen the glasses dry. A drop on the nearest glass fattens, runs to the rim, and falls into the rack's tray without chipping anything. The flask ticks as it cools. The tick slows. A bead of wet at the cap's edge swells and does not run. That slowing follows the pour and does not call anyone back. The night is finished because it is finished, the way a drawer shuts when the things are put away. No one returns to heighten it.

The overhead stays dark. The counter holds the warmer patch of her hand, and then the patch is gone. The hall gives back no second set of steps. The towel hangs square. The burner knob stays at its stop. Down the hall a door meets its latch, soft, and the kitchen does not answer it. A glass in the rack shifts the width of a grain and stays whole. No chip shows at any rim.

The glasses remain whole on the rack. The doorway stays empty, and the low dark of the kitchen holds a completed evening without wreckage. The flask's tick spaces itself out and then stops, the morning's water sealed and unneeded by anyone still in the room.
