INT. SMALL ROOM — NIGHT

Pax Ellery sits in a chair beside a lamp. He used to write instructions for machines that beep: when to sound, when to stop, what a person should do with the noise. Those pages are boxed and labeled on a shelf. The room now holds the chair, the lamp, and a silence that has stayed long enough to be treated as company. He does not fill it. A small device on the table, still able to chirp if he armed it, faces the wall. Filling the quiet would be noise trying to cross a distance it cannot cross.

The lamp's shade throws a warm pool on the chair arm and a thinner light on the shelf. The box labels are readable and he does not read them. The device's dark face gives nothing back. Its switch is a small stud under the dust. Minutes pass as the lamp humming at a pitch below a beep, and as the silence keeping its shape in the other chair he does not own. His hands rest open on his knees. He does not tap.

He reaches for the device, thumb on the switch, and feels the old competence rise, the desire to give the room a status tone, a proof of function. The thumb stays there long enough for the stud to warm. He takes the thumb away. The choice is the middle of the evening. A faint ready-light under the stud, which had begun to consider waking, dies back into the dark face. No chirp escapes. He turns the lamp a fraction so the shade warms the chair and not the boxes, then folds his hands and lets the silence sit where a second person would sit.

His breath is audible and then not something he manages. The shade, turned, settles a further fraction on its own and stops, the warm pool now clear of the shelf. The boxes stay in the cooler light. The refrigerator in the next room cycles and quits. After it, the quiet is fuller, not emptier, a presence with a shape he no longer tries to evict. The device does not use the quit of the machine as an excuse to sound.

He looks at the dark face of the device and leaves it dark. The instructions on the shelf stay in their box. A corner of a label lifts in the lamp's heat and does not peel. He does not press it down. His folded hands do not separate. The chair holds him. The other half of the room holds the quiet, unoccupied by any second body and no longer treated as a fault.

The box on the shelf gives a small tick, cardboard settling, not a machine. Pax does not look up at the labels. The device keeps its face to the wall. The stud stays cool now that his thumb is gone. In the next room nothing cycles again. The quiet keeps the fuller shape the quit left behind.

The lamp burns steady. Pax and the silence share the chair's radius, and the machine does not beep. The ready-light stays dead. The lifted corner of the label keeps its small curl in the cooler light.
