EXT. RIDGE — NIGHT

A tripod stands on a ridge under a sky that has torn. Violet holds one side of the tear. A green fracture holds the other. A small dome and a few figures are farther along the ridge, under that borrowed light. No one stands at the eyepiece.

Wind moves along the stone and does not move the tear. The tripod's legs are planted in cracks. Dials on the instrument glow with a weak steady color, the color of an earlier hour. A cable runs from the tripod toward the dome and stops short, the end bare. Minutes pass as the violet side pulsing once, slowly, and the green side holding. The figures by the dome do not walk to the eyepiece. They stay small with distance. The bare end of the cable ticks against stone when the wind finds it, then lies still. No spark shows there.

A figure walks to the tripod and does not raise a hand to measure the tear. Boots stop beside a leg of the stand. The instrument's dials still show an earlier sky, whole, with no tear in them. A needle rests on a mark that belongs to an untorn heaven. The instrument is already late. The figure looks at the dials, then at the tear, and does not turn a knob. The eyepiece stays empty of a face. A dial glass stays dull. Nothing in the needles twitches toward the real sky.

The green side of the tear brightens. A matching green opening splits the ground at the tripod's feet. The sound is stone parting, short, then wind in a new crack. The figure steps back. The dials do not update. Stones along the split show green on their fresh faces and ordinary dark on the rest. Pebbles tick into the opening and do not return. The tripod's nearest leg shivers and stays planted.

The figure joins no one at the dome. The tripod remains. The eyepiece points at the tear and has no face behind it. An instrument lies at the edge of the green opening in the ground, on its side, still ticking through the old, whole sky. Its tick is steady and wrong. A dial on that fallen instrument jumps one mark, still inside the picture of the whole sky, and stays there. The jump does not describe the tear. Green on the nearest stone creeps a finger along the old dark face and stops.

The tear stays open. Violet and green do not close over each other. A dark seam between them does not heal. The ridge keeps the tripod, the unmanned eyepiece, and the green split, with the late instrument counting a sky that has already changed. The fallen instrument keeps its tick. The figures by the dome do not come any nearer. One of them shifts weight and stays where the borrowed light is.

Violet holds one lip of the tear and green holds the other. The tripod stands empty, and the instrument on its side does not catch up to the sky above it.
