Nedra Holm was hired to record speech. The room she faces has chairs, a window, and a table lamp, and the window does not perform. Day sits on the sill and does not enter as an event. No one sits. A reel turns because she started it when speech was expected, and speech did not come. What the tape takes is air: the room's own hush, a pipe ticking once, the small weather of an empty chair. The chair's cane ticks when the building ticks and then is still. She does not lean toward the microphone to help the hush become a voice. The microphone is on. Its small light is steady. It is recording exactly the nothing it was left with.
A marked minute arrives on her log, the minute a voice was supposed to enter. She watches the chairs. The minute passes. She does not supply a sentence to help the hire along. She does not break the hours into a startle. The reel continues. Air continues. The blank card beside the lamp stays blank, because a title would be a kind of speech. Her pencil touches the card and she does not write the title she was tempted by. The temptation leaves no mark.
She almost reaches for the switch to spare the tape. Her hand stops. Empty is the document she was left with, and she keeps it. She writes the duration and the word air, then thinks better of even that word, and erases it. The card is blank again. Eraser dust sits in a speck and she blows it off the card, not onto the reel. The chairs keep their shape. The window keeps its ordinary day. The pipe does not tick a second time. The reel takes the absence of that second tick as faithfully as it took the first.
The reels hold the hours of air. The chairs in the recorded room stay empty. Nedra's hand stays off the switch. The microphone's light stays on. The log shows a duration and no title. The erased card shows nothing an arriving speaker could be called. Day on the sill shifts a fraction and does not become a person in the doorway. She remains the only one in the room, and she does not spend her voice to fill a hire that the room itself has already answered with air.
The cane of the empty chair does not tick again. Tape spools from one reel to the other at the same speed. No sentence arrives late. The blank card stays blank. Nedra lets the machine keep the hours, and the room continues to be the document: chairs, window, lamp, and no speech at all.
She does not speak the duration aloud to give the tape a voice at the last second. The microphone would take it. She withholds it. Air remains the only document on the reels. The chairs remain a row of no one. The window remains a window with ordinary day on it, and the hire remains a hire she answers by letting the silence finish.
