INT. NIGHT LOG — NIGHT

Loic Pendle logs hours that have nothing to report except that they passed. The book is open to a column for incidents and a column for time. The incident column is blank all the way down. The blanks are ruled and clean. A stamp waits. Ink pads the stamp's tray. He fills times because the book is still the work, and drama would falsify the page. His handwriting in the time column is even. The lamp is the only heat on the desk. A corridor beyond the hatch is visible as a darker strip and nothing moves in it.

A sound comes from the corridor, a single metallic knock, the sort that could become a report. Loic caps the pen, takes the lamp, and steps to the hatch. The lamp swings and steadies. The corridor is empty in both directions. Paint, pipe, and a shut door at the far end. A pipe ticks as it cools and does not knock again. He stands long enough to be sure the quiet is the fact, not a pause before a person. No one appears. He returns to the desk. The lamp goes back to its place. The hatch stays open a hand's width and shows the same empty corridor.

He writes the hour. In the incident column he begins the word knock, then erases it until the paper is only rough. The roughness is a pale scar in the fiber. Nothing to report remains the accurate line. He does not write the accurate line as a sentence. He leaves the column blank, which is the sentence. He stamps the hour and sits back. The stamp is square. The corridor keeps its peace. The book keeps the time and refuses the story. The rough patch does not get a second attempt at the word.

The hour is entered as passed. The incident column beside it stays blank. Loic's capped pen lies in the gutter of the book. The lamp does not get carried out again. The pipe does not knock. The rough fiber where a word was erased stays rough, proof of a refusal and not of an incident. He does not close the book on the blank to make it look like a conclusion. The page stays open. The hatch stays a hand open on an empty corridor. The night continues as a night with a time and without a report.

He sits back far enough that the chair creaks once and then is quiet. The stamp dries. The ruled blanks below the hour wait for later hours and do not invent events to fill themselves. The log keeps faith with what the corridor actually offered: one knock, then a pipe, then nothing worth a word.

The far door in the corridor stays shut. No second knock revises the blank. Loic does not uncap the pen to try a softer word than the one he erased. The rough fiber is enough of a record of the temptation. The hour stands as passed, and the incident column stands as empty, which is the truth the lamp was carried out to confirm.
