Scenario

Rain finds a row of empty chairs left out on a terrace, as if the night might still host someone. The metal darkens in spots and then all over. Inside, Corin Hale closes the till. He is accurate about the money. Coins agree with the slip. He locks the drawer, aligns the pen, and turns the sign on the door. The sign's chain ticks the glass. Weather on furniture is not a subject he has a column for. He is late in that way, a book-keeper's lateness, precise where the numbers live and slow where the rain has already decided the evening. The slip goes into a tray. The tray goes into the drawer. The drawer is done.
He takes a tray to the terrace to bring the chairs in, because that is the procedure. The tray is empty and meant for wet metal. At the threshold he stops. Water beads on the metal seats and runs through the slats. No guest is left to save from the wet. A napkin that might have been forgotten is not there. He sets the tray down, lifts one chair by the back, and feels how light it is without a coat over it. The lightness is the whole fact. He sets it back in its place, squared to the table, and does not fetch the others. The squared legs meet their marks on the stone. Closing the till he could do. Closing the terrace he cannot, not tonight, not by stacking the possibility away.
He returns inside, locks the street door, and leaves the terrace open to the weather. The lock turns once and seats. The lamp over the counter goes off. Rain continues its plain work. The dark inside makes the wet chairs, still catching a streetlamp, brighter than the room. The till sits shut and accurate behind the glass. Coins do not move. The pen stays aligned. The empty seats keep their invitation to no one in particular.
Corin stays on the inside of the glass with the tray he did not fill. The one chair he lifted is no wetter and no drier than the ones he did not touch. Rain keeps the slats busy. The sign stays turned. No late guest tests the lock. The terrace remains a terrace, chairs out, and the accurate drawer remains a drawer, closed on a sum that does not include the weather.
The streetlamp's shine moves on the wet metal and does not become a sitter. Corin's hand leaves the lock. The room behind him is unlit. Outside, the row of chairs holds its squares, and the rain does not stack them.
He does not unlock the door to finish the procedure he stopped. The tray stays inside, empty. Rain keeps finding the slats. The squared chair keeps its square. Accuracy remains in the drawer, and the terrace remains outside the accuracy, chairs left out for a night that will not sit down.
