EXT. FREIGHT DECK ABOVE THE CLOUDS — NIGHT

A rusted freight deck hangs over storm cloud. Cyan grids burn in the hangar bays and continue out onto the wet metal, ruling the deck in lines. The lines are straight and do not wander with the wind. The deck is open to cloud on every side. One crate sits mid-platform. Its bands are dull. A figure stands at the far end, small against the hangar lights. The figure's coat does not flap the way the cloud below flaps. Up here the air is almost still.

Coated handlers line the rail. Their hoods are up. Rain beats the cloud below them and does not reach the deck, except where a cyan square flickers around the crate and fails. In the flicker, a few drops appear and vanish. The handlers watch the failure without stepping in. The square tries again. It fails shorter. Then it catches.

The square steadies. Inside it, rain is allowed. It strikes the crate and the metal and nowhere else. The sound is local, a small hard tick inside a larger silence. The handlers step back from the wet line. Their boots stop a hand short of the cyan edge. The figure at the far end lifts a slate. The licensed square slides one bay toward the hangar, still raining, and stops at the figure's boots. Rain finds the boots and the crate and the metal between them. The rest of the deck stays dry under the same storm. Dry metal shines with hangar light and not with water.

The figure lowers the slate. The square holds. It does not slide back to the crate's first position and does not shrink. Water runs off the crate along the cyan edge and quits at the line, stopped by air that behaves like a wall. A drop reaches the edge, rounds itself, and does not cross. The handlers stay at the rail. Cloud moves under the platform, lit from inside by its own lightning-less pale. Inside the licensed square, rain keeps falling on one crate and one pair of boots.

The slate stays lowered. The cyan edge stays an edge. No second square opens for the handlers at the rail. Their coats stay dry. The figure's boots darken and stay inside the permission. Storm below continues for the cloud and not for the deck, except in that one licensed patch that has moved and stopped and will not be argued back to dry.

The hangar grids keep burning. The crate bands darken where the rain hits them and nowhere past the line. One pair of boots and one crate take the weather the rest of the deck is refused, and the slate in the lowered hand does not rise to cancel what it licensed.

Cloud under the deck keeps moving. The licensed square does not follow the cloud. It stays on the metal, a cyan permission with rain inside it and dry deck around it. The handlers' dry coats do not cross the line to test the wall of air. One crate and one pair of boots continue to take the only weather the platform is allowed.
