A projector runs. Its motor fills the little room, louder than any music. Dust turns in the beam, and the beam ends on a screen beyond the glass as a blank white field. No picture rides in it. A caretaker, a woman with her sleeves rolled, checks the gate, blows dust from the path of the light, and looks at the take-up reel. It turns and takes up nothing. The supply reel turns as well and does not thin. Leader has been threaded and the leader carries no image.
In the seats below, three chairs hold three people who have not left. One of them shifts. The creak is plain. The caretaker leans to a talkback and asks whether tonight's program was loaded. No answer comes back. She asks it again, practical, not pleading. The talkback gives her own voice back as a small dull copy and then nothing. She threads the leader a second time. The lamp stays hot. The screen stays empty. A man in the third chair stands, waits for an image to begin, and sits when it does not. His breath shows once in the colder aisle and is gone.
Heat from the lamp smells faintly of warm dust and metal. One of the three people below buttons a coat and remains seated, the buttoning a small preparation for a leaving that does not happen. Another crosses ankles and uncrosses them. The third, the one who stood, keeps his hands on his knees in a rhyme of the caretaker's posture he cannot see. The booth glass shows their small movements and the empty white they face. The caretaker does not load a different reel from the rack, because the rack holds cans with no labels she trusts tonight, and she does not invent a title to give the white a name. The motor's note drops a pitch when she reseated the leader and then holds, steady, useless, and faithful to the empty white.
The caretaker switches the lamp off, then on. The white returns, empty as before, a shade duller at the edges and still without a picture. She leaves the motor running, pulls a chair to the porthole, and sits with her hands on her knees. Below, the three people face the same bright nothing. Time passes as dust continues through the beam and settles on the porthole sill, a fine line she does not wipe. A hair of dark leader shows at the top of the white field and vanishes, not an image, only the edge of the threading proving it can pass and still carry nothing. The motor keeps its note. The three people remain. The screen does not acquire a story, and the caretaker's hands stay on her knees while the beam keeps delivering an empty white.
The white field stays empty and the motor keeps its note.
