INT. TRANSIT CARRIAGE — NIGHT

Stars hang in the windows and do not drift. The carriage is between stations, and both ends of the car are dark. The coupling doors show no platform, no sign, no arriving light. Passengers sit with bags they do not open. They move, when they move, slowly, a hand late to a strap, a blink held too long, time borrowed and not owned. A coat hem sways after the body has stopped swaying. No one stands in the aisle for long. The floor hums at a pitch that does not promise a stop.

A forward chime sounds from behind them. The sound is polite and misplaced. The nose lights dim and the tail lights brighten, and the carriage is no longer pointed at the station it left or the station it was promised. Seats that faced forward face what is now behind. The destination board blanks. Both dead names fade to the color of the panel around them. A new mark appears between the two dead names, a soft unlabeled dot, lit and steady. No letter forms under it.

One passenger stands, steadies on a seatback, and sits again. The seatback keeps the print of the hand a moment and loses it. No one asks the dot what it is. The stars finally move, not much, a patient slide that does not hurry the people watching it. A strap taps a pole and goes quiet. Bags stay closed. A hand rests on a clasp and does not open it. The clasp is bright and unused.

A passenger across the aisle shifts a bag from one knee to the other and pins it with an elbow. The clasp on that bag stays shut. Someone's shoe sole squeaks once on the dark floor and the squeak does not repeat. Overhead, a strip of small lamps stays at half brightness, enough to find hands and not enough to read a ticket. No ticket is offered. The stars' slide is so patient that a reflected star in the window seems nailed there, then proves it has moved by leaving a faint ghost of where it was. The ghost fades. The carriage does not brake and does not announce a platform.

Time passes as the unlabeled dot holds and the stars continue their small slide. Both ends of the car remain dark. The chime sounds once more, softer, from the opposite end, and the dot grows a faint ring around itself, still unlabeled, still not a name. The ring does not become a station. The hand on the clasp tightens and does not lift the lid of the bag. The carriage coasts with its quiet unchanged, and the passengers remain seated under a destination no one in the car has a word for, the faint ring burning between two names that have already gone dark.

The chime does not come again, and the unlabeled dot does not acquire a name.

FADE OUT.
