Scenario

A court holds session under black water. Thrones stand in a row, banners move with the slow weight of kelp, and courtiers in heavy robes move their mouths through judgments that finish after the mouths have closed. Bubbles carry the last of each judgment up and away, small silver loads that break against nothing, because there is no surface bright enough to meet them. On a bench before them, a sleeper in ordinary clothes sits upright without waking, hair afloat, hands open. The clothes move the way cloth moves in water, slow and late. The bench is stone and does not drift.
A courtier leans forward. The mouth stops. The sentence completes itself in the water a heartbeat later, visible as a tightening of the banners and a small loss the sleeper can see. On the sleeper's cuff, a button loosens, turns once, and drifts off the bench into the dark. The thread it leaves is pale and bare. The sleeper looks at the bare thread and understands the cost without being told a rule. Fingers close over the cuff and cannot catch what is already gone. Another courtier begins a second verdict, mouth moving, bubbles starting. The sleeper shakes their head, refusing the next loss, and the refusal only makes the banners draw tighter, kelp-cloth narrowing the water around the bench.
The sleeper stands, slow in the weight of the room, and tries to rise toward a surface that does not brighten. Arms reach. Hair trails. The court does not pursue. It only waits, mouths closing early, sentences still arriving late as delayed bubbles. A second small thing, a folded note in the sleeper's pocket, pales and comes apart into fibers. The fibers leave the pocket in a slow cloud and do not reassemble. The sleeper's hand finds the empty pocket and the water fills it.
The reach toward the unbright surface ends with the sleeper's hands lowering through their own hair. Bubbles from the last unfinished mouth break into smaller bubbles and those into nothing the water keeps. The courtiers' robes settle. A throne's arm, dark wood, shows a pale scar where an older current worried it, and the scar does not grow. The sleeper's ordinary shoes, never taken off, lift a little from the bench and then rest again, laces moving like weed and then still. No guard stands. The court has no need to chase what the water already holds.
The sleeper sinks back to the bench. The banners settle to their first slow motion. Time passes as the button turns once more in the dark and lodges under the bench, visible, unreachable. One fiber catches on a banner and stays, paler than the cloth, a scrap of the note that will not be a note again. The button does not return. The court remains in session in the black water, mouths starting and stopping, the sleeper upright on the bench with a bare thread and an empty pocket.
