EXT. CHALK COURT — DUSK

The congregation has left. Their places remain as gaps in a ring of stones, cloaks gone, no voices left to answer. The gaps are body-sized and scuffed at the heels. Petra Holm keeps the ceremony anyway. A ritual bowl is in her hands, water level with a mark worn inside the clay. She does not congratulate the cycle or announce that an end has been reached. End is what the empty places already are, and she does not add a speech to them. Dusk sits on the chalk as a cooling color. No bell is struck.

She walks the ring once. At each gap she pauses the length of a response that does not come, then goes on. The pauses are equal. The chalk underfoot is scuffed by feet that are not here now, overlapping prints dried pale. When she reaches the place where the rite used to close, she does not close it. She kneels. The chalk marks her hem. She sets the bowl on the chalk, lifts it, and sets it down again, renewing the gesture past the point where people would have gone home. The water tips a fraction and rights itself. A drop on the outside of the bowl runs to the base and stops.

Dusk does not become a finale. The bowl's water takes the color of the sky and keeps it, a held grey-rose that does not ripple away. Petra's hands leave the rim and hover, then settle on her knees. The empty places keep their marks. Nothing in the court declares the work complete. Time passes as the sky color in the water deepens one shade and no voice arrives to name it. A stone at the nearest gap, loosened by older feet, tips a finger into its scuff and stays at that angle.

Wind moves across the chalk and does not lift the bowl. The scuffed prints at each gap stay scuffed. Petra's knees keep their place. The water's surface takes a finer dark as the sky loses heat, and the mark inside the clay disappears under the color and then shows again when the surface steadies. No cloak returns to a gap. No answer is laid into the pause she already spent. She stays kneeling through that darkening, hands on her knees, the ring unfinished because she will not be the one to finish it. The drop that ran to the base soaks into the chalk and leaves a dark coin that does not spread, a small wet proof beside the bowl, separate from the ring. She does not wipe it. She does not lift the bowl a third time. Petra's hands rest on her knees. The bowl sits on the chalk among the empty places, water still holding the sky, the tipped stone keeping its lean.

The chalk keeps the dark coin and does not drink it further.
