INT. FORTRESS BEHIND A CLOSED EYE — NIGHT

Corridors of pale stone curve the way a lid curves. A woman walks them barefoot, counting under her breath in time with a slow blink she must not complete. The count is a rhythm, not a call. Torches burn without smoke. Their light is steady and red at the edges. A map etched on a landing shows towers, and the towers on the map slide a finger's width whenever her pupil trembles. She stops the tremble by staring at the stone and not at the map. Rooms stand open only while the lid stays down. A chamber she passes is full of stacked chairs, seat on seat, a store of waiting. When she glances back, that chamber has become a blank wall. The chairs are not in the wall. They are simply no longer offered.

She feels the pull of waking as a thin light at the end of a gallery, an eviction gathering. The floor there thins. She can see, through it, a pillow and a hand slack in a real room, the fingers loose, the linen ordinary. If she goes to that light, the fortress ends. She stops short of the thin floor. She presses her palms over her closed eyes from the inside of the dream, and refuses the rise. The pressure is the only weather. The light withdraws, pulling back along the gallery until it is a thread, then nothing. A tower on the map jumps to a new place. The corridor behind her shortens. A length of pale stone is simply gone, the turn she came through now closer than her count allowed. The stacked-chair room does not come back. In its place is a stair she did not climb.

She waits on the landing while the shortened corridor finishes its loss. A torch farther back gutters without smoke and recovers. Her count under her breath stays even. The pillow under the thin floor does not rise to meet her. The slack hand does not close. She turns from that light only when the thread of it is gone, and the stone under her feet is solid again.

She takes the stair because it is what the lid still allows. The steps are shallow. At the top, a narrow window shows only the red dark of a closed eye, no outside, no morning. She sets her hand on the stone. The fortress holds, smaller than a moment ago. The map's jumped tower slides another finger's width after her palm meets the wall, and then the etching is still.

The lowest step she climbed loses its edge, stone pulling back into stone, so the stair no longer reaches the corridor she left. She does not go down to test it. A torch nearest the window dims to a coal and stays lit at that size. The shortened corridor stays shortened. Her bare feet remain on the dream stair, and the pillow below, still visible if she looked, does not reclaim her.
